I want to major in something with biology and electronics( circuits ), so would that be biomedical engineering? Or is there another major I should be looking into?
Erm…I don’t know if Biomed involves circuits, but Biomed engineering for undergrad isn’t good at this time because it’s such a new field. You can go into chemical engineering or chemistry undergrad, then go into Biomed grad programs.
Or EE, if they want circuits. The BME major at my school has biochemical, biomechanics, and medical imaging/devices options. That last option seems to take a lot of EE classes.
My degree is a BS in electrical engineering with a “specialization in biomedical engineering” (earned in 1992). I wanted to major in straight biomedical engineering but had to choose either electrical or mechanical. I am actually grateful for this because I found it much easier to get a job with an “electrical engineering” degree. The medical device company I worked for wanted EE, not BME. So, I would say to focus on EE, specialize if you can, and fill your science electives with pre-med and biomedical engineering courses. Look for internships with medical device companies and/or with the clinical (often called biomedical) engineering departments in nearby hospitals where you can work with patient monitoring, surgical/cardiac equipment, possibly imaging/diagnostic, etc. I worked in both of these industries.
