Is Boston University worth the money?

I'm interested in attending BU but it's a private college and really expensive. Can scholarships/grants/aids help pay all of that for all 4 years? Btw, I'm going to be a pre med student, majoring in biology maybe? Oh and I'm OOS. But I think IS and OOS are the same price. Thanks!!(:

It is not worth it if your parents have to pay full fare. It is likely that your state university is as good and thus a better deal.

“Worth it” is relative. There are thousands of students at BU who will tell you, yes, the school is “worth it.” But that is a subjective opinion.

What isn’t subjective is this: BU is expensive. It’s located in a (very) expensive city. And it has the reputation of not offering very much financial aid.

Unless you are an exceptional student or have an exceptional talent BU wants - you will not get significant aid for all 4 years.

As a general rule, most people will advise that if expensive graduate school (especially medical school) is in your future, you should keep your undergraduate costs as low as possible.

So even with all the scholarships and grants that you receive, BU’s tuition is not doable?

You will only get scholarships and grants if you qualify. Check the net price calculator on the BU web site.

Have you asked your family how much they can pay? Are your stats very high for BU?

Would your other choice be UMass Amherst?.

If so, if money is a problem, I would go to UMass Amherst.

Boston University is not that much better. Or perhaps not even as better.

Now, if your choice were Dartmouth and UMass, that would be a different story.

Should I still apply even if I couldn’t afford the tuition?

^Only if your stats are competitive for the big merit scholarships that BU gives. Otherwise, there would be no point in applying to a school that you could not afford.

If you want to go to medical school, you should minimize the amount of debt you are taking for your undergraduate degree. Unless your parents can afford the full COA or you get a large scholarship that covers most of your expenses, you would be better off with a cheaper option.

How much is the big merit scholarship?

BU offers several levels of merit aid based on GPA, SAT, and ECs. You can check their website for details.
