Is Brown a great school for pre-meds?

any thoughts?

I have seen your pre-med-related questions, and I'm concerned that you chose to apply to Brown for its prestige. Ask yourself: Is Brown a right school for you? Will you fit there? Will you be happy there? If you answer no to one or more questions, don't apply.

To answer some of your questions, Brown is a well-respected and prestigious school. After all, it's an Ivy League. Of course, the classes are not a joke. The professors expect students to work hard and handle rigorous workload. More importantly, they want you to be an active participant in your own education.

Biology is one of the most popular majors at Brown, and it's a well-respected department. Although Brown doesn't offer a pre-med major, it still provides a dynamic undergraduate experience for pre-med students. Therefore, it is a great pre-med school. You seem determined about going into medicine. Why don't you apply to PLME at Brown? It lets you pursue a career in medicine and guarantee you an admission to Brown's medical school.

I applied to the PLME, but I was deferred. I got into the College though. .

Oh, congratulation!

This thread brings up a good question though...

We hear a lot about Brown's "pre-med" program being the PLME, but what if you choose not to do PLME, but discover suddenly at Brown that you have a great interest in going to med-school. Will Brown prepare you through its courses for med-school, or are you "screwed out of it" because you weren't an original PLME-ster?

pre-med really isn't a major, it's more of a track that you take along with whatever you decide to concentrate in. it's basically 10 classes that you have to take to apply to med school.

PLME is just a program that ushers you right into Brown Med School w/o taking the MCATs. a lot of people are pre-med and not in PLME.

Ahh OMG liz is back :-)

and she's at Brown... the future home of someone else ;-) hehe

haha chyeahh dude i'm so excited for when you're at brown next year! are you going to ADOCH?

hahha of course! can't freaking wait

Word is employers complain that PLME's aren't properly prepared for medical practice.

That's bogus, the only thing they skip is the MCAT. Otherwise they are in school for 8 years just like everyone else.

Pre-med is about doing the best at the best school. Brown is clearly one of the best schools in the country, only HYPSM have a slight advantage over it.

nonsense. You prepare for medical practice during residency. PLME refers to a combination of college and medical school. No one is prepared for practice when they graduate medical school, so meaningless to discuss this in terms of PLME.

thats not exactly true slipper, they only have to take one semester of orgo (yeah, that may be a minor detail, but still)

Also they only need a 3.0 gpa, which is extremely low compared to what any of the other premeds need....

Personally, I think PLME is dumb, and I've heard rumors that PLME is on its way out because BMS has complained that a PLME student is more likely to be unprepared than a non-PLME student. Wouldn't surprise me. A not insignificant fraction of the PLMEs I've encountered in my classes don't necessarily care about doing as well as they can, but only well enough not to get the boot from BMS.

As for whether Brown is a good pre-med school, the answer is yes.

Brown is a pretty good medical school (though it is ranked somewhere around #40 in USNews, I think it's on its way up), but I've also heard complains about PLME. I suppose the less-than-stellar requirements to STAY in the program are the cause. With that said, congratulations are in order for anyone to get in. The students who get into PLME are truly amazing.

alright, the rumors about PLME are unfounded and need to be put to rest.

1) the PLME program is a staple of Brown Medical School and isn't going anywhere

2) PLME's are a select group of the smartest kids in the country. a small minority take advantage of the freedom of the program and slack a bit during college but most work very hard and use the extra lattitude to do interesting things that pre-meds elsewhere are unable to do (write a novel, do year-long field studies in uganda, etc.)

plus, people can surprise you. there's one kid in our class that we all thought was a slacker during the pre-med years--turns out he is just brilliant and laid back. in med school he consistently gets the highest grades in the class.

3) they're not less prepared than other pre-meds. as a second year med student at Brown, i can attest PLME's are as well prepared as the students in our class from Harvard, Yale, MIT, and other great pre-med schools
