I don't really mean the numbers. For current students, do you feel that your time at Carleton has been spent meeting people of different backgrounds and cultures? Or is everyone kind of the same?

Yes, I do. Someone who defines “diversity” as solely diversity of race would probably disagree with me based on sheer numbers, but I think there’s a lot more to real diversity than that.

I will add that it would easily be possible for a Carleton student to isolate him/herself within a friend group of peers of the same race/economic background/political views, but I haven’t found that to be the typical Carleton student’s style.

I don’t want to post too much identifying info, but I will say that I am tickled by ds’s stories about the kind of kids he’s met. I’ll PM you.

Youdon’tsay- what is so intersting about who has he met? As a prospective student I would love to hear about students there too.

My Silicon Valley daughter found it pretty startling when a friend at dinner said “Oh, that reminds me of the first time I slaughtered a sheep…”
I don’t think it was in reference to dinner, just something in the conversation, LOL

^^^ That’s the kind of thing I was talking about bingle, a diversity of life experiences in addition to just ethnic diversity.

My son, a freshman, was a litle concerned about Carleton in comparison to the NY metropolitan area he grew up in (he goes to NYC all the time when he’s at home). He was a little worried about the place being awkward, not enough to do, provincial. All his preconceptions were wrong, wrong, wrong. He is blown away by the people, who come from all over. Over the holiday break, he visited a friend at a New England university and said that only 3 out of 50 people he met there had heard of Carleton. His reaction was that this NE university was provincial, drawing primarily from New England, whereas Carleton has students from all over the country and the world and is more, well, worldly. And, I should add, he’s busy all the time, and not always with academics (sigh). And he says that students mix it up a lot–it isn’t all athletes vs all nerds. In fact, they may be one and the same. So metrokids, have no fear, there’s diversity. And, you’ll be able to see the stars much better at Carleton.

Thanks, everyone!

I live in New York City, but my family lives in a small town in Minnesota. So I was hoping that Carleton would be a mixture of what I consider to be my two homes. And by all accounts, it sounds like it is!

For applicants or parents of applicants, you might want to look at the blog posts on the Prospective Student section of Carleton’s website (although I can’t imagine you haven’t already). Interesting posts from abroad, too. I especially like Marlena’s photos. She took some fantastic photos of the wind turbine earlier in the school year (or maybe just before classes started).

Roughly speaking there is a higher concentration of easterners (NE and Mid-Atlantic states) at Amherst than midwesterners at Carleton.
