I'm currently choosing b/w Rice University and Carleton. I love both, but one of the most noticeable differences to me (besides the weather, obviously) between the two schools seems to be in diversity. I know Rice is very diverse, but Carleton doesn't seem to be from what I've heard so far. Is this true?

(Don't get me wrong, I know Carleton is diverse in many other ways--socially, politically, etc.--and is home to students who have a range of different interests, but I'm just concerned that lack of diversity ethnically may be somewhat of a con... but PLEASE feel free to prove me wrong, i'd actually appreciate very much :-)

Carleton does have a bit less ethnic diversity than Rice, but the numbers don't seem staggeringly different to me:here

Rice Carleton U.S. Population

Asian 15% 10% 4%
African-American 8% 6% 12%
Hispanic 11.5 5% 12.5%
Native American 1.5% 1% 1%

(Percentages from Rice's website, a Carleton admissions office document for the current year, and the US census website, respectively. )

thanks for the stats... 4% Asian population for the U.S. seems really low for some reason, but I guess it must be right if that's what the census says

You might talk to the Indian family / owner here, http://www.chapati.us/, they are about 2 blocks from campus. For the record, my D is a fairly dark half-asian coming from a more diverse public high school. Greatly impressed with Carleton freshmen, at first she had some fear of URM discounting or others' such thoughts, I reminded her that her admission might have something to do with val + 11 APs. She has several anglo wannabe bf.
