Is Chem 3BL Intense/hard?

Today in Chem 3AL,

We had to do an intense lab where we used chromatography, performed recrystallization, and had to find a melting point of a compound.

My GSI said that Chem 3BL usually involves multiple processes and that the lab we did represents Chem 3BL.

Is that true?
Is it intense>
Are labs grades hard?

Any insight/info from students who have taken 3BL is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!

You have to do chromatography, recrystallization, and melting point like every lab in 3BL…but its not hard and you get used to doing it. You also have to do NMR spectra (look at one and figure out the structure of the compound) every week. They are graded pretty hard too. But I wouldn’t call it intense or hard. You just get used to it as you learn what your GSI grades on.

I do that every week in 112A.

^ Indeed…

How is your Chem112A lab?
Does the lab has its own curve since it has different tests for different session(I assume) ?

YEAH remember how to do NMR spectra analyzation but it doesn’t matter if you don’t. A lot of people go to GSI office hours and do the lab with them. If you’re gsi doesn’t help you out, go to another one. Mine is very helpful and goes over all of the questions with me if I want him to. I wish I had known good GSIs were out there before.

but for the most part, it’s not as hard as chem 3al, which you actually had to analyze your own lab on.

If Chem 112B labs are similar to 3BL, it might be better. You do everything individually. For 112A/B, the lab is integrated with your overall grade (it’s 5 units), so the labs are … sort of curved. (Not really)

NMR is tricky at first, but you get the hang of it pretty soon
