Hello All,
I have committed to Colby and I am so excited to go next year. However, I am already considering transferring after my freshman year to maybe go somewhere more prestigious such as an Ivy League, a well known research institution, or a “higher ranked” LAC . Although I thought Colby was on the same level as Williams, Bowdoin, Pomona, Amherst, Swarthmore, W&L, etc. , due to Colby grads often ending up in similar if not better jobs and grad schools, it seems as though people consistently put the schools as being way beyond Colby on many levels. Should I consider transferring next year so I can get the best, most challenging college experience? Or maybe my thoughts are in the wrong place? Please leave your comments below.
Are you kidding?
You’re asking in Colby College’s section. What kind of answer do you think you’re going to get here?
Were you admitted to those allegedly superior schools this year?
I apologize, what I wrote was admittably stupid. I’ve just been kind of in the dumps recently. I just thought since it wasn’t such a recognizable name in my small high school, I should transfer for better grad school and job placement. But of course this makes no sense. I apologize again for what I wrote.
I am assuming that you are talking about Colby College in Maine, and not Colby-Sawyer College in New Hampshire.
I think that Colby College is on the same level as Bowdoin or other top LACs. As long at you can get in and your can afford it, Colby will be a great experience. You should be very excited to go there.
You don’t need to apologize. Colby is a good school but remember college is all about the fit. I see too many responses on CC that are rude and jump on people. If people don’t care for something someone says on a blog, they need to just keep scrolling. I hope Colby is the fit for you and that you have a great experience.
Yes Colby is a good school. There must be reasons why you chose it over whatever your other options were (Bowdoin maybe based on your other threads?). It is not unusual to have second thoughts, but transferring simply in search of higher prestige or better name recognition seems pretty shallow. Note that getting in as a transfer student to some of the schools you’ve mentioned could be even harder than getting in as a first-year admit… Transfer is always an option If you find that ultimately the school is not meeting your needs, but I don’t think it should be the first thing on your mind before you have even started. My advice: remember why you chose it and give Colby an honest chance.
