Transfer

Hey
I'm a first year at Wellesley College and I'm thinking about transfering for Fall '06 and Colby is one of the colleges I was considering. I just have a couple questions...

Do you know how hard it is to transfer in? Wellesley's a competitive school, so I figure that will look good, and I'm doing well here (As and one B+) and I'm active on campus, but I really have no idea how the transfer process works.
What's the social life like at Colby? One of the reasons I'm thinking about leaving Wellesley is because of the more or less lack of a social scene. Do people drink alot at Colby? I know Maine schools are kind notorious for that. Are there alot of drugs on campus? I'd really appreciate a straight forward answer on that because I know alot of times people will try to think of what the person wants to hear.
What are the people like? Are they generally artsy? Preppy? Hippy? Athletic? Is it a mixture of everything?
What are the classes like? Are they more discussion driven or lecture driven? Are the professors accessible?
Sorry this is wicked long. Any comments you have would be appreciated.

thanks!

I'm a senior this year, but I can't help you out with advice about transfering, as I only know a couple transfer students on campus.

I can describe Colby for you, though (please excuse the format of it, they're just random comments for the most part):

Keep in mind that I cannot speak for the whole school, as I'm only one person with a very limited perspective. However, from what I've seen, the social life on Colby campus is centered on drinking and partying. I would suggest visiting if you're looking into applying; or if you let me know what you're interested in, I can tell you how much of it is on campus.

As far as drugs go, there are the occasional Marijuana smokers, but you won't see too much of it. I haven't seen anything other than that.

You will find "artsy, preppy, hippy, and athletic" students on campus. The students, for the most part, are very nice. Colby reminds me a bit of my prep school, but it is a great place. Colby isn't the most diverse place, depending on where you are coming from.

I'd have to say though, that my favorite aspect of Colby is class. I've had a couple bad classes, but I love most of them. This year I have a classes that range from one with 4 students in it (mostly discussion, even for Math), and one with 15 (mostly lecture). Intro classes can have up to 100 students in them. All of my professors have been very accessible, and our advisors for our majors are also quite helpful (usually).

I really like the Math department here, and the Physics department is alright. The Econ department is supposed to be very strong, but tough. I also hear good things about the languages here.

I have a lot to say about Colby, as I'm in a dual-degree program with Dartmouth. If you're looking for more info, feel free to message me or continue this thread. It would also help to know more about what you're looking for.

Let me know if this helps.
