Is college for me?

I’ve just started my first semester of college this August, and I really don’t like it. I don’t know if it’s the fact that I have mostly online courses that lack that familiar high school structure, or if I was limited in the choices of majors i had available and abruptly chose one that seemed similar enough to what I wanted to major in. I live in small town and their weren’t a lot of college options around me that had any degrees in the areas I wanted to study. I’m really lost in my life right now and don’t know what I need to do, I’m only 18 so I’m really new to this whole adulting thing.

There’s “college” in terms of taking courses in order to attain a degree. Then there’s “college” in the more traditional sense: going to classes, meeting new people, walking around a campus, being exposed to many different fields of study, be surrounded by tons of people with the same fears and doubts that you have. I’m not surprised you aren’t very inspired by your out-of-the-gate experience - you are missing out on all of the fun stuff. I don’t know what your financial situation is like, but is there any way you can go farther afield? Being exposed to a campus more may inspire into being more emotionally invested.

Or, maybe you need a year off to figure out what you want to do. Why waste the time and $$ when you are so unmotivated? Sometimes stepping back for a little while allows you to get clarity about what you really want out of your educational experience, and your life, in the short term.
