is cornell cals a suny

no its a state funded school but it is not part of the suny system

yeah (to sports), it's state "endowed" not SUNY

Well, if you go to the SUNY app website, there's a little portion for CALS. However, I don't think it's called a "SUNY" specifically.

CALS gets money from the SUNY system because of the research that it does, but it is not a SUNY school.

HAHA!

I like that.

There is a joke on campus....people say that CALS and HumEc should secede and form SUNY Ithaca, thus helping bring up Cornell's status in the Ivy League....

If you want to bring up Cornell's status get rid of the Hotel School. They are the one's bringing in the low high school GPA's and SAT scores. If CALS were to secede Cornell would be losing a lot...CALS does so much research in science and agriculture that is constantly being mentioned in the news. Say good bye to the Dairy Bar, plantations, apple orchards, AEM...

I didn't say that I was the one who made up the joke, just that it existed.....

no all the colleges are important. the whole is bigger than the sum of all the parts. prolly because half of cornell medical school is all the way around the other side of the world :-p

Perro, I know didn't mean it, but I just wanted to make sure that anyone applying to CALS did not think it was the black sheep of Cornell.

No, no, i dont think anyone would ever think that.

They all know the hotel school is the black sheep.

:P jk

What is CALS? and what is SUNY?
CAn anyone explain? thanks

My oh my....

All I can say is wow.

CALS = College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, one of the colleges at Cornell University, an Ivy League school founded in 1865, located in Ithaca, New York, and considered to be one of the world's premier research institutions.

SUNY = State University of New York

do people look down upon cals students on campus

no, but people make fun of hotelies. unfortunately.

I think spn2200's comment is a gross generalization. There are students at the Hotel School who could have been accepted into CALS, HumEc, ect. Many of the students going for, say, engineering could never make it in business world. They have to look at charisma over standardized test scores.

I will agree that my comment about Hotelies was very general. I was originally in the Hotel School before transferring to AEM. I would say that the Hotel School has lower SAT scores but this is because the adcom looks at other factors besides your raw numbers. Nonetheless, there are still many very bright hotelies.

Thanks, spn. :) If you don't mind me asking, what made you switch out of Hotel? Was it easy to transfer?

Yes CALS is part of SUNY. I used to be a faculty member there

-Well, without offending anyone in the Hotel School, I did not care for the student body party because they were way too into hotels. I also did not like the classes since they focused on operations too much.

-Psat, I didnt know it was officially an SUNY school. What did you teach when you were at Cornell?
