Is Dartmouth an overall great school to attend?

Hello,
I just want to know more about Dartmouth College.
I heard it was a great school that was diverse, but that it is a heavy drinking school.
I want to join a sorority but I do not like drinking or rowdy behavior.
I am also an African American female so I hope there is some kind of diversity.
I think it would make me feel a little uncomfortable to see a rare amount of African Americans on campus.
I also want to major in Political Science and International Affairs along with a minor in either human rights or bioethics, so does Dartmouth have a strong program for those majors/minors?
I also like the location (NH-east coast) of the school but how are the dorms/area around the school?

TesfayeB, please listen to the many, many people advising you to focus on more realistic options. I know you don’t want to hear this, and I know that it’s harsh, but with your stats, you cannot get into Dartmouth.

@irlandaise I will still apply to the school through Questbridge regardless. I will also be applying to test optional schools as well. I just wanted to know more about Dartmouth that is all

Here is Dartmouth’s common data set for 2013-2014 -This Page Has Moved. Check page 11, where it lists the percentages of incoming freshmen in each score range for the SAT’s CR, Math, and Writing. QB is a great program, but not a miracle worker. You’re concerning yourself with fantasies of prestige

I have not taken the ACT yet! And yes I agree my SAT score is not a chance but I am retaking it so maybe I will do better or I might just submit my ACT scores. You would be surprised with who gets into QB as a finalist. People with low GPA’s or low SAT/ACT scores actually become finalists so you never know @irlandaise

Those people with low scores/gpa are rare and had to have outstanding achievements. I don’t mean to understate your achievements but they just aren’t on that level. You may be sorely disappointed when the results come back…

I think the common data set speaks for itself. Those incoming freshmen include the ones that got in through QB. They still had scores that fell into Dartmouth’s optimal range. I hope you do well on the ACT, but look at this conversion to figure out where your ACT would likely be - http://www.act.org/aap/concordance/estimate.html</a>. It is not feasible you’d get an ACT score high enough to be competitive.

@hwhat318 okay!
@irlandaise alright thanks

Why do you insist that you will applying to a school you admit you don’t know about or have yet investigated if the programs are suitable for you? Please don’t say you will apply regardless before having answers. That is just a bad approach. Please do some reading in the Dartmouth forum. There is discussion about the dorms and surrounding area and def about the drinking and frat/sorority things. I will add that I met a girl from there once who was very happy recent alum and she remarked that the school green was like the social center of the town,.

Okay well I men’t to say that I was going to apply through QB to Darmouth after I researched, regardless of my stats at the moment. @BrownParent but okay thank you for the insightful information :)

Dartmouth is all about drinking lol. Why apply?

Do you attend Dartmouth? Well I want to join a sorority and also focus on academics, I am mainly looking for a great school with a good political science/ international relations program. I think the area is very nice and that is about it so far haha @TSchaser

My friend attends Dartmouth. Its a work hard play very hard atmosphere. Very greek.

I’d reccommend checking out DC schools like GWU or Georgetown.

TSchaser - you must be new to this thread. The OP appears to be a lovely girl, but she is academically unqualified for any of these schools. Many of us have suggested alternatives, but she is determined to pursue an impossible dream.

@TSchaser okay thanks for the advice!
@woogzmama read my other response on my chance thread. I am also looking into test-optional schools thanks

It strikes me that there are many, many very kind people on CC who try to give legitimate and thoughtful advice to you people without resources. Some of them don’t have their priorities in order, though, and can’t or won’t listen.

OP, take the suggestions from your first thread and start some research on what is realistic. Best of luck to you!

Meant to Swype “young” people.

She already knows she needs to improve her scores. She is working on doing that. Right now, she’s just asking about the campus environment for one school. Just answer the question instead of just telling her she isn’t good enough and that her scores aren’t high enough.

OP, take a look at Dickinson, a more reasonable school with your stats and test optional.

Okay I will @intparent thank you for your advice. And I am just asking about the schools and the environment so please just answer my question. I understand I am not qualified at the moment to Dartmouth, but I am working on it. The information I have received is pretty repetitive I have heard from about 11 + people that I need to STOP thinking about ivy league schools etc. with my low SAT score but I am working on my prep so it does not help or hurt me that I am receiving continuous comments that all say that I need to stop dreaming and look at more reasonable schools with my stats.
