Well... is it? Or is it supposed to be nerdier and more academically focused? Or is it just a really well rounded school thats great at everything? Somebody recently told me that it's supposed to be for very sports oriented people... and personally, when I visited the campus and met some of the students, that was DEFINATELY not the impression I got. So basically I was just wondering whether Deerfield really is a very sports oriented school and they're just good at hiding it... or if the person who told me Deerfield is really sports oriented was just under the wrong impression.

Oh ya… and just to clarify, I know that Deerfield has mandatory athletics and all. Many good private schools do, so I don’t consider that specific evidence as to whether or not it is any more or less of a “jock” school.

Haha sorry deerkiss… to be honest I actually have to clue what you’re talking about! :P

Yes it is. You need to have at least 1 sport that you are better than average at. It is good to have 3 that you are great at… all in different seasons!

When we talked to my educational consultant on Deerfield, she said that it was one of the most sports-oriented schools and that if you are not really good at least one sport, you may have some social issues with fitting in. The upside of this is big school spirit. :)

Go deerfield!!! :)

Really?! Wowzers… I would’ve never guessed that it was so sports-oriented from applying and visiting the campus. And the educational consultant I talked to never mentioned it either! WOW!!! I’m just really shocked… (Having a moment here! )

I was under the impression that it was just a really well rounded school. I had no idea that athletics was an activity that was superior the rest.

Well… I guess it wouldn’t really make much difference for me. I’m an intense field hockey player in fall (YEA MIDDIES!), I swim and dive in winter, and I play lacrosse and softball in spring! Although out of all of those the only ones that I’m above average at are swimming, diving and field hockey… so I guess the others don’t really matter much. :P

Sorry for all the questions guys! – But now that I know my views on Deerfield were so off, there’s no harm in checking if I really know the other BSs as well as I think I do… right?

If you guys could describe the following schools for me in a few words (sports-oriented/jockish, academically focused/nerdy, well rounded… etc I would REALLY appreciate it!

Thanks in advance for your help!!! :)

Hotchkiss

Groton

Exeter

Andover

St. Paul’s

Taft

Middlesex

They are all extremely good academically, but obviously some are going to be a bit more sports oriented than others.
(This is all IMO. It is the impression I have. I believe that all these schools are awesome, so I’m not bad-mouthing any of them!)

Hotchkiss - Pretty athletic, but great academically!
Groton - A little less sports oriented than the others, but still manages to have good teams.
Exeter - Definitely athletic, but very intense academically as well.
Andover - Great in sports and academics.
SPS - Less athletic out of the HADES schools.
Taft - Definitely athletic.
Middlesex - A little more ‘artsy’ compared to the above schools.

Hope this helps! Good luck with your applications!

“well-rounded” compared with “jock” is a better term to describe Deerfield. The school is trying to build as balanced a student body as possible. They want their students to be able to take more than one roles in the school community, which is true with most top schools but is particularly important for a smaller school like Deerfield.

on Deerfield v Choate Day, Choate won 9/10 varsity events…at Deerfield

A great day for Choate! I think, in many ways, the reputation of Deerfield in the 1980’s (before coeducation) still lingers in some people’s minds. The school had great success in sports which makes sense because they had 600 boys, effectively competing as a “coed” school of 1,200 students. Since coeducation, the school has swung back dramatically towards an academic-minded, and well-rounded institution. There are some teams which are great (lacrosse) and others that are not, typical for all of its peer schools. It is no more or less “jocky” than most schools. I would also caution those on CC from painting ANY school with a broad brush. We know some of the stereotypes of the different schools and usually it’s just that, a stereotype. Almost all of the NE schools are looking for the same thing: smart kids who can do more than just work hard and score well on tests.

Touche, hola!

Now maybe Avon and Salisbury fit more as “jock” schools, because they are all-boys and, as such, less susceptible to the female persuasion. Broad brush, of course, but it is not without some validity.

It’ll be harder or near impossible to get into deerfield as a 10 or 11 grade girl I heard

jyun212, why do you think it is near impossible to get into deerfield as a 10 grader…this is truly my d’s first choice?

Deerfield overenrolled big time last year. Most of the overenrollment was for 9th grade girls. Therefore, they have fewer spots this acceptance year for 10th grade girls. I was told this by an admissions officer at Deerfield.

guys, just think about the cheese.think.about.the cheese…yeahhhh

lol nvrmnd me haha

Yah girls r over represented

If schools overenroll, I think they should still take in the average number of applicants. It is not fair to those applying this year to have a lower chance, because of the school’s silly mistake.

I don’t think Deerfield would just accept a couple of 10th grade girls, that would be both unfair to the 10th grade hopefuls and to them, if they miss out on truly extraordinary people. And while I think most of the schools are very good at athletics, they’re also super strong academically. I felt that all the schools that I visited except for Hotchkiss were more keen on sports that arts, however.
