Although there definitely is self-segregation, I think that Duke is not only racially diverse but also very racially accepting school. Overall, there is a tendency for students of same race or those from the same country (*international students) to hang around together, but that is not the case for everybody. You definitely see racial mix in.

However, since the school is big, ethnic organizations prove a good way to make friends in the beginning when you may feel lonely.

I'm not going to lie--there are racists at duke, and people subscribe to a lot of the common stereotypes about asians. but duke has a very big Asian population and presence (especially south asians.) that helps a lot. basically, if you're indian at duke, you will have an extremely easy time finding people to fit in with (both asian and non-asian) and find acceptance.

I wouldn't call Duke racist, but I would call Duke cliquish. Cliques form for many reasons, race is one of them but it isn't the only reason.
The social scene at Duke may have some people thinking that it's high school all over again.

there are definitely the rich white kids who think they're better than everyone else... but i just avoid them and all my other friends are really chill and great. i have friends of all ethnicities and they're just really great people.
