Is Duke Racist?

i'll get straight to the point-

im international.
indian.
non white (obviously)
and keen on duke.

then i read this-

"there was also an article about the benefits of white supremacy in the Chronical."

i've heard the south isn't exactly friendly to non-whites? (true?)

perhaps the article was satire, as has been suggested on another post, but it still disconcerting- given that Duke is in the 'south'.

i don't live in america so my opinion is merely based on what i have heard/read.

there are four days before my deposit is due. Georgetown is another option for me. but i am still favouring Duke.

whats your opinion?

im a black man from texas and im going. lol

Flamethrower, see my post in the "Drop Out Now" thread for some clarity on the "article".

Duke is not racist I would say, but there might be a frat culture you might find alienating if you arent used to it. There is a big Indian community if thats your thing...much larger than at G-town. I would go with Duke.

I don't know what the percentages are, but I saw a lot of asians at duke.

Duke is not racist! There was no article on White Supremacy in The Chronicle. If there was it would have been a HUGE deal on campus and many of the cultural groups on campus would have been very involved in discussing the article and expressing their own non-ignorant views.

Duke, based on my experience with the grad school and alums, is far from racist.

Definitely not racist.
I went to visit..and everyone there was welcoming and extremely friendly. (I'm Indian too)...quite unlike another experience I had in another place in NC.
The international community is large and the people are very accepting.
I don't think we'll have a problem.

duke is in a liberal area of north carolina. there are regions/pockets of north carolina that i have been to that are horrible but duke itself is not racist and far from it

My great-aunt lived in Durham for over 30 years-she never faced racism..

Any more viewpoints on this issue?

Nope, still not racist. We have rather large numbers of international students and minorities. Most of my friends are minorities and I've never once known anyone to have a racist experience on campus.

Fisk called the campus "self segregating." My brother goes, and from what i can tell he sorta agrees. He wishes there was more diversity in his day to day life. Pity... Go i doubt people will care that much.

Hmmmm. White-bread sophomore son is rooming with an Indian friend from last year. We made a point of going to the S Asian dance expo over parents weekend-the student audience was quite diverse. One of S's very best friends is AA. I could go on.

I don't think that he or they are at all unusual.

Maybe some students "self segregate," and do so along many lines: ethnic, sports, frats, interests... I think the bottom line is that there are some social activities that focus on the shared cultural or religious experiences (think Shabbat dinners and step dancing as examples) and some people will focus more on those than others.

right, well most universities (and HS's for that matter) tend to self-segregate to some extent?

You get what you put into it. My roommate last year was Chinese, and one of my best friends was an officer in the MSA. I'm not Jewish, but I often ate at the Freeman Center (the MP gets old).

I met Fiske when he visited my freshman dorm (Alspaugh), and he seemed very impressed with Duke.

Bingo, Warblers.

Your first sentence says it much better than any of us has managed so far.

You get what you put into it.

i hear that at duke, the main reason for the self-segregation is the fraternities.

The black students and other students are alienated by the white fraternities and the same happens to whites in their fraternities. And since the biggest connections and cliques occur along frat lines, the different cultural groups tend to end up together.

Thats just what my friend that goes to duke told me.

I feel that there are definitely a lot of racist people here, but they seem to be the type that can only express what they're really thinking in an anonymous venue.

I can't speak for what it's like for Indian students since I'm not Indian, but personally, I am starting to feel a little bit uncomfortable here.

I can't seem to edit my post anymore, but I wanted to say that "some" rather than "a lot of" would be better wording.
