I have sent in my deposit to UofC after thinking about it for a long time and it took me a lot of courage to send the 'no thanks' letter to Duke. I decided to attent chicago because of the fact that i will be studying Economics and I know uofc is definitely the place for me. BUT lately i have been reading threads that are starting to make me regret my choice( especially BnB's in Anyone else going here because they rejected an Ivy?). Before i start beating myself for the decision can anyone tell me is Duke really better than uofc as a school if not considering Economics.......

why would you base your entire future off of one person's comments on college confidential? obviously, BlacknBlue doesn't speak for the 4,000+ undergrads at uchicago... nor does he speak for the 1,200 new freshmen who are about to enroll at chicago in the fall.

don't sit around reading collegeconfidential.

go on thickenvelope (for admitted uc students) and get to know your future classmates...

it worries me that you aren't sure enough with your decision that you are getting nervous over someone's comments on college confidential...

I chose between the same schools last year (except not econ). I'm currently a freshman at Duke, but I'm hoping to go to Chicago for grad school. You can read my thread if it helps.

Duke and U Chicago are so close on the undergrad level that it would be an exercise in futility to try to prove one "better" than the other. There are other, more important factors that clearly separate the two. If you like Duke, you probably won't like Chicago. If you like Chicago, you probably won't like Duke. Perhaps a bit oversimplified, but nonetheless accurate. Both are wonderful schools, and they each have plenty of things going in their favor.

Don't go to Chicago solely for the economics program. Just don't. It's a very good program, but there is much more to a college experience than your major. Chicago attracts a very specific breed of students, and it's not for everyone. Neither is Duke.

It's not that i am not sure. If i was not sure i wouldn't have submitted my deposit when i still have a few more days left to decide. It's just something in me that needs reassurance that i did not make the wrong decision. Come to think bout it, i've already sent in my deposit anyway. Might as well look forward 2 it and forget bout Duke...Thanks for the comments..Really appreciate it.

of course you didn't make the wrong decision.

as far as i know, nobody makes a "wrong decision" when deciding which college to go to... we're going to college, for godsakes! that's amazing in itself.

:) i'll see you in the fall.

warblersrule86:

I really appreciate unbiased comments and this is one of them..I guess i'll have to accept that both schools are good in their own ways. I sometimes associate chicago as the road less taken by in "The road not taken" and i believe by taking the route of chicago i'll end up a better person..=)

true!!!!! We're all goin to college and it's gonna be a whole lot of fun!!!=) see u all on Sept 16th...

and perhaps a sexier person

Thanks everyone for the comment..=) so who chose maxp as their 1st choice???=)

daren_s

Most college students have second thoughts about their choices. Both Duke and Chicago are great schools and there is no wrong choice.

Don't pay any attention to people like BnB.

PS With the admissions rates at Ivy league schools, there are a lot of "ivy league rejects" at other schools. So what.

I hope i'm over that 'uncertain' period by now...=)

A Harvard official stated that 3 out of 4 students admitted to both Yale and Harvard chose Harvard. Since many students apply to both, this suggests that Yale is full of disgruntled Harvard rejects (otherwise most would be at Harvard). Must be sad to be around all those rejects... Yale adopted the guaranteed full ride to attract lower income students from Harvard, but Harvard matched and raised the amount offered this past year, poor Yale.

yeah I do feel kinda sorry for Yale people, because if I had to pick between these almost identical schools, I'd def. go to the one with the name-dropping power, but thank goodness it didn't have to come down to that!!! Chicago 2010 whoohoooo!!!

Not quite true. Don't forget, Yale fills 48% of its incoming class with SCEA admits, most of whom choose Yale (as their first choice).

daren i chose max p as my 1st choice!

I repeat, do NOT listen to Blacknblue. He is a miserable troll who spends his time constantly disrupting threads on the Chicago forum. I find him exceedingly irritating, and I am not someone who cares if anyone knows that Chicago is not a state school (most of my relatives didn't!). Follow your heart, listen to your gut, whatever. You probably don't need reassurance. I find it very curious that several people are making a Chicago/Duke decision, mostly because it seems to me the campus culture is very disparate. I would never have applied to Duke, but I like that there are people with different perspectives and who had different ideas about college who will be at U of C.

And as Tiffany said, go over to the Thickenvelope boards! MUCH more representative of your future classmates!

I chose Duke over UChicago, but it was a really really really tough decision to make. Because I live in Los Angeles, Chicago felt a lot more like home, except for the whole walking everywhere and taking subways to get to places...that I wasn't really used to because I like driving myself everywhere I go. I'm not sure that the whole "if you like Duke you won't like UChicago, and if you like UChicago you won't like Duke" thing is really that true...I mean I totally loved both schools after I was done visiting, and I ended up basing my decision on stuff like weather, core curriculum, and hate to say it, but parents. Both my parents really want me to go to Duke, and I think that I'm going to like it there a lot too. But like a bunch of people before me said...you can't go wrong with either of these schools. I personally feel that Chicago's core curriculum is a bit too hardcore for me--I've just worked my butt off for four years of high school, and I just don't think I'm quite up to the challenge at Chicago. Not to say that Duke will be easy, just I think the general requirements aren't as stringent as Chicago's so I think I'll have an easier time choosing courses that won't work me to death. Either way, Chicago is awesome, and I hope you like it there. :)

cookiemonkey1004: cool!!! see u there!!! aren't we excited? haha..

lilpixytiff: Hope you'll like it there..Duke is GREAT school..Guess you can know how hard it was for me to make the decision. But now i'm just looking forward to fall and join my future schoolmates...=) it'll be fun...!
