You forgot Princeton lol.

Smart Guy- I'm not "really" a Californian... although I'm sure I am biased towards the inclusion of Caltech (I'm a student there). I'm actually from Florida.

You forgot Princeton lol.

And MIT ;)

Well that's debateable. When someone mentions the three of the power four (HYS), it's obvious which is missing...

I dunno I usually see Stanford left out if someone is talking about the three top schools, not Princeton. HYP is more common than HYS, especially if were are talking about East Coast.

Delta Royale didn't "forget" Princeton.

DeltaRoyale:Princeton will fall a lot since it's getting rid of ED.

However, I think Princeton isn't going down too much anytime soon.. Princeton's overall acceptance rate isn't going to go up that much even though the school is increasing its enrollment and no ED will decrease its yield.

And to answer the OP's question.. Duke's ranking will probably stay around the same for the next few years.. and a slight chance that Duke could go ahead of Stanford and MIT on US News, :D.
Duke has been ranked ahead of MIT regularly.. :p, but of course US News doesn't mean ****!

I was talking about posr #44

I want to Duke's ranking to go up too.

I think nationally, prestige seems to go like: Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Duke...

^I agree, although people who knew Caltech would probably consider it more prestigious than Duke.

Stanford ahead of Yale and Princeton? Are you from the West Coast, boyle?

Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Duke...

That sixth one (Duke) is definitely debatable. Things get a little crazy once you get outside of the top 5 (HYPSM) and some will argue for Columbia, UPenn, Caltech, etc. in place of Duke. Suffice it to say that Duke is a great school, but that is not the prestige pecking order as outside of the top 5 as no such generality has been made.

I have noticed that the people who really obsess over rankings are those from top notch universities that for some reason or another suffer from some degree of ....."inferiority complex". Great examples of that are..( i am clearing my throat now.....) Duke University and The University of Chicago. No matter how much higher they rank, history can not be rewritten and these schools will never be part of the Ivy League nor carry the distinction that doing so brings.

(Ok, begin the slaughter now...)

Dude, the Ivy League is an athletic conference and it doesn't really represent the 8 most prestigious schools in the country or something. Besides HYPS, which are DEFINITELY the most well-known schools in the country without a doubt, the remaning top-notch schools compete for prestige based on individual preference and regional understanding.

Me too. I realize we're posting in the Duke forum, but I'm amazed at the bias/school love here. Your "top 10 to impress the average Joe" list is hilarious since you place Duke (albeit well known) at #5 and MIT (the premiere math/science school of the US in most people's minds) at #9.

Again, I don't think that it's easy to say which schools are the most impressive sounding outside of HYPSM, though I will tell you from personal experience that in my area Georgetown, for some strange reason, seems to have an aura about it that makes eyes light up. For some reason it is very well known and well regarded by parents/friends, and it is a great school, though most don't consider it on par with HYPSM. Other names that I knew of long before I began the college search:

Notre Dame, Duke, Oxford, Cambridge. Other than that, I didn't learn about a lot of schools (including greats such as Columbia, Dartmouth, Brown, CIT) until I started the college search process. So yeah, Duke has always had the name-brand appeal for me, but ranking it above MIT in terms of the most well-known prestigious schools is funny.

Huh. I would've thought Penn (sans Wharton) and WUStL. Berkeley posters tend to get a little touchy about rankings as well, albeit for a different reason.

Interestingly enough, a PR survey established that NYU was the most popular dream college for students. Duke, of course, also did rather well.
http://www.princetonreview.com/footer/pressreleases/pressrelease_2006hopesandworries.asp

warblersrule86, you are right with Penn also. They have the issue with Penn State which drives them crazy. I looked up your reference and it is very interesting indeed. I know nothing about NYU but I do have a lot of friends that applied there together with HPY and were looking at the school seriously.

More people know about Duke than MIT though, especially in the South where Duke reigns supreme.

The Top Ten Schools if you want to impress me:

0.) Duke, obvi.

1.) Princeton: House works at their medical school. And their MBA program is consistently rated highly by employers. But why is their law school unranked?
2.) Harvard: They have a gutsy President and faculty who are free to study any hypothesis. Totally free of political correct censorship. ... what?
3.) Yale: "I voterified that bill before I unvoterized it."
4.) MIT: Provided the M stands for Mississippi, of course. Rumor has it there's an uppity one somewhere around the Northeast. But I think that's just an offshoot of Harvard. Or Tufts.
5.) CalTech: Not to be confused with CalTrain or CalTrans, or MediCal, or CalPers... pretty much, this is the only thing with "Cal" in the title that doesn't entirely suck. And that's quite an accomplishment.
6.) Penn: Nittany Lions!
7.) Columbia: Studying in a South American country -- and surviving the constant drug wars -- speaks volumes about strength of character and integrity. Plus, Jack Sheppard went there.
8.) Duke: What? USN doesn't have a basketball ranking? Why not?!
9.) Stanford: Graduating from college while battling mono every October is quite a feat.
10.) University of Chicago: I didn't want anybody to accuse my list of being private-biased, so I had to include a public somewhere.

Honorable (sort of) Mention:
Brown: It's not a real school!
Washington University in St. Louis in Seattle
Northwestern University: Seattle's second-best school.
Hopkins: That's where House went. What a nice guy.
Dartmouth: Dartmouth? Who went to Dartmouth? Dartmouth sucks! Did you go to Dartmouth, Bing?
UC Berkeley: By far the most prestigious of the bunch, as long as the only people you need to impress haven't seen a ranking since 1965. Or are from Asia.
Rice: "I'm gonna stick to you like white on Rice!" Obviously not a multiethnic school.
Notre Dame: First school in history to be named for a Disney sponsorship. (If they pay enough, maybe they can substitute -ton for -Charming.)
