Does anyone know how Duke was ranked back ten years ago and how long it took for it to go top ten?

Duke's been in the top ten since 1989 I think (US News rankings)

It usually hovers around 5-7

How can I see past US News rankings?

google it, I remember seeing a listing of previous yr's rankings sometime ago.

I don't think you can find something like that.

here it goes, the year and then the ranking
1991 - 7th
1992 - 7th
1993 - 7th
1994 - 7th
1995 - 6th
1996 - 6th
1997 - 4th
1998 - 3rd
1999 - 6th
2000 - 7th
2001 - 8th
2002-2003 I think it was 6th and 7th, not sure about that
2004 - 5th

Usually its ranked somewhere in between Harv, Yale, Pton, Stanford, CalTech, MIT, and Columbia Penn Dartmouth; however, the rankings in the top 10 are sometimes volatile within in itself

IMPORTANT

Some people are bashing Duke on the Cornell board, check out the thread:Emory VS Cornell. Need some backup!

lol they are just depressed because they are going to Cornell :)

I would be too...that place is freezing, and the buses and printer paper cost money ha

but yeah, thats reduced into bashing and I can't bash Cornell because I might have gone there if I wanted to be an engineer.

I'd never heard of Cornell until I went and researched schools in NY, and not alot of my friends have. From a southerner's perspective, Cornell isn't all that great.

This is why I think the "Ivy League" label is abused...people use it to put their school ahead. Cornell's so often called a lesser-ivy anyway...

Sorry...just mad at people bashing my school.

just stop provoking them and let them talk... A friend of mine visited Cornell and said she wasn't thrilled with it. At my "northern" school, I believe two people applied to Cornell and two applied to Duke. Plus, what I don't understand is how people can get all enthused about an "ivy-league" education, since the ivy league is just a sports group... it doesn't make the school ten times better than every other school. Sure, Harvard and Yale are top-notch schools, but if you were to take away their ivy-league status, nothing would change. Just my thoughts...

I went there and refuted their points.

OMG Cornell ppl are insecure!

"Duke wouldn't even have as much name recognition as it has if it weren't for it's basketball team. Duke has to use it's basketball teams popularity to boost applications and to bring in the students. Cornell uses it's academics. I don't know if I ever would have heard of duke if it weren't for basketball."

I might have to get involved.

What a bunch of day dreamers. They think they are better than we are, and not only that, they do not accept facts such as the rankings of US News where we are ranked 5th in the nation. Anyways, some folks refuse to open their eyes and see the world the way it really is.

well, the anti-duke rhetoric is coming from only one person, who actually was a student there last year.

also, only one person was there that was favoring duke over cornell but they all kept talking about all the "duke trolls"

oh silly, defensive Cornellians

The fact remains that Duke and Cornell are pretty equal when it comes to prestige & academics.

I doubt any employer/grad school will treat degrees from the two schools differently.

Nah. Cornell's reputation is regional, at best. I only heard about it because of there...hockey team. Cmon, Duke is better hands down!!!

(pretending to be one of them)

But internationally I'd have to argue that Cornell is better, probably owing to their Engineering School.

And since I'm heading to Duke this fall, I'm going to shut my mouth now :o

Who cares about what some farmer in Bangladesh thinks of your school? International prestige really is irrelevant to me.

well, that doesn't matter for people who a) aren't engineers and b) aren't planning on moving away from my favorite country without a grad degree

(i was also just kidding though)
