More people know about Duke than MIT though

And you're basing this on....? In my experience, among the "laymen" that don't necessarily keep up with colleges like us freaks, everybody knew Harvard, Yale, Stanford, and MIT, and most everyone knew Princeton, though you'd be surprised. I think you're giving Duke's name a little too much credit. Granted, as I said, it's one of the biggest brand names in the country, but bigger than MIT? Most people know MIT simply due to its awesomeness, but its proximity to Harvard (both physically and in the rankings) make it extremely well known.

Brown: It's not a real school!
[/quote]

Lol...you'd be surprised how many students I talk to that don't know what/where Brown is.

bluedevilmike....I am lmao with that google search.....hilarious!!!

Duke is definitely well known in the south, along Vanderbilt, Emory and Tulane (which almost disappeared...and certainly no longer attractive...)

Haha, I have trouble detecting sarcasm in real life, so it's even harder on an online forum. Furthermore, people have actually asked me about Duke's rep as the "party school" of the top universities! :D

Might be an indication of the level of general knowledge at Duke but the University of Chicago is NOT a Public School.

I'd be less concerned about the Duke lax scandal blowing over and more concerned about how the Duke Administration and the 88 Commisars/Professors rushed to judgement and used the accusations to spout their political garbage.

BigGreen: The Duke Administration shouldn't be lumped in with the Group of 88. While I personally think they didn't do enough to defend the students, I would never say that they used the incident as a way "to spout their political garbage." I believe, at the time, the administration made the best decisions they can based on the information they have.

BigGreen, I am afraid you totally missed Bluedevilmike's sarcasm !!!

I know that we are all touchy about this whole name recognition thing, but I have learned to get over it..It is actually kind of funny after a while!! A very personal anecdotes:

When my very well educated and professional mother heard about a friend of mine accepting Carnegie Mellon's offer , she was puzzled and said....OMG and she could have gone to a top school...I thought she liked engineering and now she is into a new school about melons??!! People, this is the truth..I nearly died.. ( if is any excuse..we live in the south..)

Duke is a fantastic school. Whether it is number 3 or number 20 is completely ridiculous. Remember the College rankings edition for USNews is like the swimsuit edition for Sports Illustrated. A way to get money from people who dont ordinarily subscribe. Its a mkting tool. It should never cross anyone's mind when applying to colleges. For such a "savvy" group, the CC community worries about it way too much.

Duke is great and so are about 50 other schools. Pick the one that siuts you best and enjoy college.
