Is Emory good for English/writing majors?

In answer to starflower007’s question, our D graduated in 2017 as a double major (Creative Writing and Spanish) with an honors thesis. The English/CW program was one of the main reasons our D applied to Emory.

Emory’s CW program is pretty competitive and our D found it hard to get into some courses she needed since she didn’t really start taking the majority of CW courses until junior year when she returned from studying abroad. bernie12 and chemmchimney are correct that Emory is attracting some very talented writers; our D felt like she was in the middle of the pack when she started but felt like her time was well spent at Emory improving her craft. Her senior year advisors were terrific (especially Jim Grimsley) and urged her to apply for several CW dept. awards she received at graduation (which included prize money), so they were very supportive.

@BiffBrown That’s amazing. I love that the proceeds are being offered as a donation to the CH of Altanta as well. I will also do extra research on particular faculty members who stand out. Thanks for sharing helpful links with me.

@PiccoloMom1995 Thanks for sharing your daughter’s experiences with us. I’m an extremely dedicated writer and I actually like the prospect of a competitive atmosphere, as long as it’s not too cutthroat. Also, that’s great that her professors were encouraging and she was offered awards.

@chemmchimney Thank you so much for your in depth response and suggestions for writing programs post-graduation. It’s helpful. I agree that real life experience and submitting to as many journals and contests as possible will be beneficial for me.
