Is engineering a poor major for people with ADD?

I have ADD from hell and it's somewhat difficult for me to focus on things. I generally need to interact with things in order to focus. Is this a killer in engineering fields? Also what engineering fields are the most interactive/least interactive?

This could make engineering difficult, though I don’t believe it would be impossible for you to succeed! Engineering at many schools is pretty theoretical, so unless you enjoy that aspect, it can feel pretty dry and be tough to want to pay attention anyways. To learn these well, you generally got to be able to listen and understand these things in lecture, and/or supplement these concepts via a textbook and then work some problems. All require a level of discipline and focus, especially if you find it boring.

Again, however, I am confident you can succeed at engineering if you are passionate, even if it may take some more effort on your part. I will note, there are more hands on engineering schools out there than theoretical, so you should look into that if you think you would prefer that instead.

Oh no, theoretical aspects have always come easily to me. The only thing that I worry about is the fact that my mind moves like a pin ball in pin ball machine and it moves super fast. I’m wondering if this would sabotage my career as an engineer?

Okay good. And I mean, if your mind moves super fast thinking about the work you have to do, I doubt that could cause any problems, haha. I think you could do it honestly.

Yeah, my mind is like a natural think tank for solving problems. It’s just learning to focus it on one thing, that’s the problem, lol.

You will be amazed how many working engineers have ADD. I’m not saying getting through school is easy for them. But once they are out in the work force it is not so bad.

Engineering academics are HARD for almost everybody. The tough part for you with ADD is that there are many required courses. Other majors have more electives, allowing you to tailor classes to areas of interest.

Really? A lot of engineers have ADD? That’s a surprise. You would think that most engineers would be extremely focused individuals.
