Video essays are a hot topic in college admissions as more schools allow them

Another impediment to kids from low income homes.

Hopefully a trend that won’t continue. No reason for it. Unnecessary distraction from applicant’s resume and message. Applications should level the playing field so everyone can be reviewed in the same way; adding a video component would totally upset that concept.

Very interesting. Charisma can become a hook.

Maybe it’s a shame the user name “Curmudgeon” is already in use, but I don’t care for it. I realize the article never quite asserts that the application essay is outdated, but until such a time as writing for academic purposes is obsolete, I can’t see why the application essay should be.

This reminds me of a time when my kids were in elementary school, and we were complaining with some neighbors that our kids seemed to be making dioramas constantly , but rarely, if ever, writing a report. We wondered, will their professors be saying, “Well, that’s an excellent question. Let’s just look that up in this diorama over here…”

Seriously, I don’t like it. It just doesn’t seem to fit a college application in my head.

Marketing tool-- to entice a certain demographic. Like someone else said, another barrier to lower income applicants – and therefore won’t be adopted by upper echelon schools.

LOVE this.
