I am thrilled to have been admitted, but with the aid package they have presented us, attending really is not much of an option at this point. Basically, my noncustodial parent has refused to offer assistance with my education and this is putting me in a difficult spot. Do they work with students in my situation?

Definitely contact them and see what they say. Don’t ever walk away from an acceptance without at least seeing if there are any other options. The worst thing that will happen after talking to financial aid is that you will be in the same situation you are now.

I was in a tricky position as well because my dad was unemployed when I applied to schools. The schools hesitated to give us a whole lot of money because they expected that he’d find a job in time. He didn’t. We talked to officers at Middlebury, appealed, and they ended up increasing our GRANT by about $12,000. Obviously, this is specific to my case (sibling in school, our assets, whatever), but the message here is don’t give up! I’m a first year student now and could not be happier… Best of luck!
