Is first generation still valid if...

…one of your parents attended university outside of America? I just wanted to know if there was any advantage to being the first in your family to enroll in higher education in the USA, even if one of your parents has a degree from elsewhere. Thanks!

No.

we wondered about that too for friends; mom is from western africa and holds very low-paying job here in US; she said she attended (didnt graduate) some university/college for a bit in her native country. Are college systems the same in other countries? does attending, but not graduating, take away the first generation hook for her kid?

One my dc’s friends has been participating in hs first gen programs because the family is first gen in the US not first gen college. I have mentioned that she isn’t supposed to participate. Pretty sure she won’t get away with it in college.

If your parents have a college degree, PERIOD, then you’re not first gen. Regardless of whether or not it was in the US.

Attending but not graduating, however, does not count, so the student is still considered first gen.
