Is flying to an OOS college to visit necessary?

I have been considering NYU.

All over their web-sight are posted little banners reading, "Visit Us!"—right above their statistic saying ~50% of applicants are outside of the tri-state area.

I live in Southern Missouri, and the only realistic way of visiting NYU is through flight. So, must we buy plane tickets to visit NYU before sending in an application? Are all of those students who aren't in that area of the country flying to go look at NYU?

I realize NYU isn't exactly cheap, and maybe if affording a plane ticket right now is hard-pressed, this college's tuition isn't right for me, but even if I were looking at a different distant college: Must I fly out there before sending in an application?

In my opinion, visit after acceptance. That is what a lot of kids do with colleges that require a plane. I am visiting as many schools that are in car distance from me as I can. I am in NYC, so I will be visiting schools on Long Island, NYC, Boston, Pittsburgh, Phillie, and DC, before applications are in. I may visit California (by plane) IF I am accepted to the school there

Thank you. =)

I live in NYC too. I think you’ll be disappointed and wasting money if you do decide to come and visit, since NYU only comprises of buildings. If I were you, just go to Google maps and type in New York University and do a virtual tour. Also, go to youtube and search for NYU.

i also think you should only visit once you’re accepted. and if you’re really planning on making the flight, then maybe apply to some other NYC schools so then you can visit multiple places, because i think flying out here just for NYU is a bit of a waste of time. depending on your stats, maybe consider columbia/barnard, fordham, etc
