Should I visit NYU even if I don't have a great chance of getting in?

I'm going to New York for Syracuse University, but is it worth it to visit NYU even though it is a reach school for me? I have a chance of getting in, but it's not great. My main concern is that I will like NYU and then get a rejection a month from now.

Should I suck it up and go since I'll be in New York anyway or should I wait til decisions?

If time and money permit, you could wait until decisions. If it were my child, I’d want him to visit a school if he was going to be in the neighborhood anyway. You need probably a full day at most schools to have time for the tour, the info session, eating, and accosting random students and asking them questions.

If money DOESN’T permit a later visit, don’t fall in love with NYU because they’re notorious for giving acceptances without the necessary aid. Don’t go to any school that’s going to require you to take out tens of thousands of dollars of loans.

Money isn’t an issue for me, an acceptance is an issue for me. If I did get in, I would seriously consider going, depending on whether I like what I see from the visit or not.

Would it make sense to wait til decisions or to get a sense of whether I like NYU or not now?

Why don’t you think you’ll get in?

Syracuse is quite a distance from NYC. Unless you have another good reason to drag yourself halfway across the state of NY, it would be fine to hold off on that NYU visit until you know if you have been accepted.

^^^ is correct, the schools are about 4 - 5 hours drive from each other. So it depends…if this in your one and only trip in from far away, then you should try to see both schools. If you can wait until acceptances come out, I’d do that.

NYU is a great school, but you should see it in person – there is no traditional campus, it is a bunch of buildings in Greenwich Village – some people love that feeling and others don’t.

^^ well mainly because of my low SATs.

And I live in Florida so I don’t know if I want to make the trip to NY twice.

if you live in Florida then the two schools are relatively close and if money is not an issue …a trip to NYC is always nice. Agree with above that the two schools are dramatically different and you need to understand NYU’s campus situation before deciding to attend.

Is it possible to wait for both decisions before deciding on your trip? Perhaps you could hold off and attend admitted student days at one/both as appropriate. Good luck

You can take a puddle jumper from Syracuse to NYC. Flying from Florida to Syracuse usually involves a stop n NY. Just make it a longer layover.

Why are you visiting schools before you have all the results? Seems counterproductive. Most kids visit in April and most high schools grant them that time…to seniors, who have been accepted, to do so.

April is decision month.

Syracuse is a completely different school from NYU. Nothing wrong with that, but apples and oranges. Syracuse is a very good school, traditional frats and sororities, big into athletics, and a pretty campus. NYU is very urban…like extreme. No campus, per se. No sports really (a few division III clubs, but only a few sports). NYU is private, but its HUGE. Like 35,000 huge. Many people prefer NYU for graduate work. The exception is the Stern Business school. But its entirely up to you.

Kids do get into reaches, but usually with hooks. NYU is a school everyone thinks they want to attend and they get bazillions of applications. So its not too likely if its a true reach for you. I would wait to see what happens and visit only the schools that accept you, put the schools that waitlist and deny behind you and make your selection, then buy the gear and embrace the one who loves you.

NYU was a reach for me but I applied and got rejected. I hope you get in

I ended up going because of issues with my dual enrollment classes (on spring break this week) and I am shocked; I thought Syracuse would be a great fit and that I would hate NYU but it was the complete opposite.

I didn’t expect that I would be able to decide which college is the right fit for me but I am so glad that I know now! Now all I have to do is get admitted to NYU lol but if I don’t it’s not the end of the world, but it would be incredible.

Thank you everyone!
