I've heard that it's preppy and conservative (and thus, not for me). Is this true? I really like DC and it seems pretty so it would be good if it wasn't...

The person who interviewed me said that in terms of political views, Georgetown is about 50-50. I don't know about how preppy it is, though. (Although I wouldn't automatically equate preppy with conservative - I'm a conservative, and I'm the least preppy person I know.)

More like 80%+ liberal. Also pretty preppy but I mean you'll find similar levels at all schools in this range.

visit and see for yourself. in general, georgetown students aren't the sloppy college kids you see at other schools. but to say everyone or even most of us are preppy is a bit of a stretch.

Georgetown is still relatively more conservative than most top tier schools, right?

figures that I would get into the two conservative schools... u of c and gtown.

Well, I would like to add a question to this thread: are students constantly forced to be worried about their belongings? I have an expensive computer and some other "nice" things that I want to bring with me; should I be concerned about the security of my stuff? I've heard stories (about other schools) where anything not nailed down is stolen, and, although I wouldn't think that Georgetown is like that, I would like to hear from a student on this topic.

Not all preppy people are conservative.
A lot of the preppy people I know in my high school are sheepish supporters of Barack Obama.
All the top colleges are liberal to an extent, since it is considered 'cool' to be liberal.
I imagine Notre Dame is the most conservative given its Catholic foundations.

"Are students constantly forced to be worried about their belongings? I have an expensive computer and some other "nice" things that I want to bring with me; should I be concerned about the security of my stuff?"

In general no, like you can leave your stuff unattended in the library while you run to the bathroom or w/e, but it still good to take precautions, if there is someone next to you, just ask them to watch you stuff. I haven't heard any stories of ppl getting their stuff taken by Georgetown kids themselves, but that doesn't mean that it won't happen ever. So the best is to be save. And UIS (Georgetown' tech) offers a tracking device that they can implant into your computer. I'm not sure on the specifics, but essentially they can track your computer (I believe).

The computer registration is actually done by DPS, not UIS (i used to be a UIS nerd).

Gtown isn't as preppy as people think, and I'd say that there was a much larger percentage of students that were Obama supporters than McCain. People went crazy when Obama won, I think I heard fireworks near my house.

Kind of, but very liberal

In the beginning of the year my roommate and I used to lock our doors all the time, but after a while when everyone got to know everyone the floor it just didn't seem necessary. I really trust everyone. That's not to say that it's the smartest idea, but its indicative of the community. I also know that during finals people used their stuff to save spots in the library for hours without problems. Things happen of course we live in a big city, but it's not really a rampant issue.

As far as the school being really conservative or preppy, I think relatively to our peer schools we have a larger conservative community, but if anything it's an asset. Democrats are in the majority defiantly, but as a school that prides its self in its political focus its important that there is a balance. It's more like the real world. No matter your political philosophy you'll find your place here.

Wow, hec2008!
The people you live with must be really good people or you are incredibly naive about what college students can actually do with other people's things.

Now I wouldn't say that...

What hec2008 describes is pretty common place (esp. in Harbin where I lived frosh yr), we left our doors opened when we just quickly stepped out. Of coruse always a good idea to leave doors locked when you're going to be out of room for an extended period of time. But I like to re-eiterate that it's not a big problem at Georgetown, I haven't heard anything huge anyways... but again use common sense...

Thanks for the comments on security. I just wanted to make sure that I should not leave some of my favorite belongings at home just because of theft problems.

I do live in harbin and my floor is really very close. I would be incredibly shocked if something ever happened. If anything I would expect people to say something if they ever saw anything suspicious.

Of course. Security is always an issue on students' and parents' minds and its natural to what to find out what security is like, but I think you will be very pleased with Georgetown's security (although we get some thefts and break ins off campus here and there), but Georgetown is a very safe area (where many congressmen and affluent people reside). Every community has some sort of crime, albeit small in affluent neighborhoods, and Georgetown is no exception. But let me re-eiterated Georgetown is very safe!

not very preppy. that was also one of my big concerns but its definitely not like that.

It's preppy - maybe not as much as you think, but it definitely is preppy (why is that a bad thing again?)

Georgetown is very very preppy

There's a reasonable degree of preppy, where people are khaki and polo type and then there's the popped collar (triple layered) with white bucks. There's madris shorts and then there's the regatta look. Nothing wrong with the former, but the latter is a little too much like living in a catalog or bad parody.
