Is getting a minor worth an extra semester?

Hi all, this is my first post on this site! I hope someone could help me out with my question! Thank you in advance!

So, I am currently an undergraduate student majoring in Criminology and Criminal Justice (CCJS). My original graduation date would be in Spring of 2014. However, I can actually graduate a semester early by the end of Fall 2013 if I do not decide to minor; I am debating whether or not if it is worth it to minor in something called International Development and Conflict Management (CIDCM) at my school. It is for students aspiring to a profession in the fields of conflict resolution, international development and humanitarian relief. I am interested in this because I want to also work in federal agencies such as the CIA or FBI in the future.

I am not sure if it is worth it to minor in it because I was also thinking of applying to law school, which would help me stand out to get into certain federal agencies. If I decide not to minor, I would be able to graduate early and possibly focus on studying for the LSAT. However, with the competitive job market today, I am not sure if the minor would help me or not by me staying an extra semester. Money for school tuition is also a factor.

What do you all think? Would it be worth it to stay in undergraduate school for another semester (I would be graduating on time) and minor or should I just graduate a semester early? Thank you!

No. Minors are essentially pointless unless it’s something you’re really interested in.

No, not at all.

Is money a factor?

If you aren’t planning on taking the LSAT, go for a CS minor. CS is by far the most sought-after degree in the Federal government.

If you are planning on the LSAT, don’t bother with a minor.

No, it isn’t worth it.

Nah, probably not worth it.

no, 99.999999999999999999% of the time

I can’t say I would EVER recommend that my kids stay in college an extra semester to finish a minor. However, if you have taken a signficant number of classes in an area like that, highlight it by saying on your resume. But don’t pay an extra semester of tuition just to say you have the minor.

I also have a similar question. A minor at my school is only 4 courses; and since i am studying international relations and economics, i really need something more technical that will help me in the job market. So i’ve recently started considering IT; do you recommend getting a minor in IT even though it’s only 4 courses? Would that help me in getting employed at all?
