I want to commit to Chapman University, but I’m hesitant because what if online classes will continue into fall? It’s impossible to assume when quarantine lockdown will be over at this point. Is it a waste of money to pay for Chapman tuition when I’ll just be taking online classes? Should I just go to community college? I don’t want to go to community college at all and I really like Chapman, and I don’t want to go through the application process all over again to transfer out of cc, but I also don’t want to waste my money, which is very important at a time like this. Worried my parent might lose their job, who knows, right? I sure don’t. A gap year also seems like a waste of time because it’s not like I can find an internship or something during quarantine, same issue there. No idea what to do and quite stressed. Just Class of 2020 tings
If you attend cc first you’ll likely be considered a transfer student. Transfers don’t generally get much aid. Can you afford to be full pay if you lose your aid at Chapman?
you aren’t alone and you raise several legit concerns. I’d expect classes to start on most campuses by late August. I have a friend whose daughter is wrapping up her freshman year at Chapman - taking classes on=line at their family home. The school refunded the unused room/board. No concessions on the tuition though.
Several years ago i was unexpectedly laid off while my son was in college - he was at a CSU and we had saved/planned so he was able to stay without stressing the family budget. Through that lens - I’d advise that If your parents don’t know if they can afford all 4 years - Chapman may not be the right choice - pandemic or not.
Do you have any other options, a CSU or UC perhaps?
I have UC Riverside but after visiting the campus my parents were worried about safety and said I couldn’t go unfortunately
I think I’d be able to afford Chapman with my scholarship and no aid, but I definitely wouldn’t be able to afford it without the scholarship AND no aid
If you have any concerns go to community college.
in my experience, most merit aid includes some gates - to be continued - like you need a min GPA and be making progress toward graduation.
If the net price of Chapman works for your family, you -then go. Just be sure to understand any conditions that apply.
