Is Harvard GSE worth the $60k?

Hello,

I'm an applicant for the 2013-2014 school year at HGSE. Specifically, I'm applying to the PSP program, meaning that I might do a second year in the CAS Program. If that were to occur, then I'd be doubling that 60k to 120k.

Fortunately, I'll be coming out of undergrad with 0 debt. Still yet, 60-120k is still a tremendous sum of money, particularly for one entering the world of education.

So, given all of that information...is it worth the money given the opportunities that HGSE offers?

I look forward to your responses.

Thanks,

It depends on what you want to do. What is the average salary in the field that you intend to enter? Even if you had the opportunity to be a math teacher at the best high school in the entire country, it wouldn’t matter because math teachers start out at $35-45K and cannot hope to ever make $120K a year - so they can’t afford to repay those loans. But if you intend for your Harvard M.Ed or whatever they are offering to lead into some kind of policy or administrative position that has a higher salary - something in the $60K range or so - then it may be worth it to you for the connections.

One of my LOR’s came out of HGSE in 2008 snagged a job with Secretary of Education and subsequently as White House Senior Domestic Policy Advisor with Ed.M program, at age 28. I’d say it’s worth it but it depends on what you’re looking to do.
