Is Harvard Safe?

Is Harvard a safe school to attend in Cambridge day and night?

Im gonna be a freshman at Harvard next year and I hear its safe. I was out walking the streets at 3 in the moring during the pre-frosh weekend and had no trouble at all. From what i've seen and heard, Cambridge is as safe as an urban area can be.

Yes, definitely, I used to live in Cambridge.

cambridge is not immune from problems
the above link lists some recent incidents

harvard is relatively safe...

there were a few muggings and robberies, but other than that i have never felt unsafe...

Cambridge is a city, and like any other city, it has crime. The levels are rather low, so it's really nothing to be concerned with.

Cambridge is pretty safe: just use some common sense and you'll be fine. The only piece of advice I've heard repeated is to be a little careful around Cambridge Common at night. For the Quadlings there are frequent shuttles if you feel uneasy about walking back and forth.

About two or three times per academic year, HUPD emails the student body to notify them that someone was mugged on or around Harvard campus. If I recall correctly, no one was seriously injured in any of the incidents this year.

So if this only happens a very few times a year, it's certainly acceptable for a city campus. It shouldn't be a concern when you're choosing schools.

Something that might bother you much more are the significant number of homeless people that stay in Harvard Square. They never enter the Yard, but they still sometimes verbally harrass pedestrians.

And here I was thinking harvardorbust was a Harvard troll because of this: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=370270
Good to know that he likes to issue his attacks against other universities as well.

Cambridge is fairly safe compared to most urban areas. As long as you use basic common sense, everything should be fine. Of course, you must tolerate the dozens of bums in Harvard Square, but crime is not a major issue.
