a lot of my friends aren't in my grade, so there aren't any problems :)

"it is now 4 me! in 9th grade i made a new friend who seemed very nice and even though we didnt have any classes together, we saw each other b4/after school. at the awards assembly that yr i found out i had the highest GPA and since then she has been very competitive and at times, spiteful. the worst thing is she pretends she doesnt do any work, but in reality she does A LOT to get better grades-- including lying to me.
things r going to be really different jr yr since everyone's stepping up their game."

That is exactly how I lost my best friend. I won't elaborate, since I know that she probably lurks on College Confidential.

Not my school, everyone except for an exceptional few is pretty dumb. I used to tutor my classmates, but man I'm so sick of helping out dolts who are ingrates as well.

Umm never happened to me. Nobody stopped being my friend because I beat them in academics, and nobody was that competitive. Well, there was our valedictorian but she was usually nice outside of school.

High ain't a scene. It's a God damn arms race.

My first thought when I saw the thread title was similar...
While high school isn't a scene, it may just be an arms race. The god damned is optional and up to you.

I really need to stop listening to FOB.

A lot of my friends are in the same classes, but none of us are competitive to that degree (at least, they don't show it), so it's not a problem. There's a few people who are really competitive and really care about beating people, but most people at my school don't care much about college or high school.

This one kid at my school I became friends w/ (he's going to be val) and frankly he discouraged me 2 do good freshman year....with the result that I fell out of the top10% of the class even though my EC's are superb, which I now realize he basically backstabbed me. Junior year I'm going to be a fascist grade grubber and EC-hogger since ive been falling away so much

my school is ULTRA-competitive - to be in the top 10% of the class u gotta have a 4.0, i only got a 3.9

Most of my friends are also in the same rank area as me now, around the top 10th - 20th percentile, and im ****ed because I dont know if I can get back to the top 10% if I dont get a 4.0

yeah same. The only kids that are competitive at my school are the top 5 kids, even though I might become one after this year. They hurry to get all the APs and then they strudy their butts off.

The competition I've delt with was when one of my friends and I were in the last spot for Varsity golf. I didn't realy think I could make it, but I did and I beat him (by 1 stroke! pwnage) Now, we aren't so good friends. lol

To Vicky-Sky

I was in a very similar situation this year. I made a friend who wasn't in any of my classes, but seemed nice, and very concerned with grades and the advanced classes I was in. I would talk to her at lunch, before, and after school. In the beginning she would review notes in front of me when necessary, etc. But, when she learned I was at the top of our freshman class, she suddenly started pretending that she rarely, if ever did her homework. She said she goofed off in class, and never studied. It was all a lie! She said she was over her obsession with colleges, but she went to visit Harvard this summer.....

I think it also makes a huge difference how competitive your school is as a whole.

My school is not really competitive at all. Sure most of our students go on to universities, but I can't remember the last time someone graduated from Millikan and ended up at HYPS.

Which doesn't bother us really because that's not where any of us want to go in the first place. It just leads to a much more laid-back atmosphere.

My school sends about 10 People to Ivies every year o_O

I wish my school sucked more because then it would be easier to get a high rank
