Is Hofstra a good school?

Hey Guys,

I am trying to make a narrower list of colleges and I have been looking into Hofstra. They have this 3+3 program that looks enticing but I don't know how the academics at the university is. Is it challenging or is it a breeze? I would appreciate any feedback!

Thank You So Much

bump anyone please?

What do you want to study?

lol no. it’s a local school for B-C average students and is a huge waste of money

@Chardo: I would like to study Law there… I heard their law program is not shabby

Mostly true. It is a big commuter school for mostly B and lower students, and it is not cheap. Campus is unimpressive. The law school is well regarded, but undergrad, while not bad, is nothing special. They are trying to raise their stature. They hosted the presidential debates in 2008, giving them national exposure. They just announced a brand new medical school in partnership with a great hospital system. First class starts in 2011.

Agreed with Chardo. Find someplace better!

@Chardo: Student to Student would you recommend me going there? I got a 30 on my ACT, 3.91 unweighed GPA, and 32/580 class rank…

Missed your response. As I said, the law school is pretty good. Nassau County is like Lawyer Central. Many prominent lawyers also teach there. Next town over is the county seat, including all the courthouses. Many law firms located right near Hofstra, offering good recruiting opportunities. Long Island’s largest law firm is a block away, fwiw.

Well, I’m not a student but I’ll give my advice. Overall I think you might have a better experience going elsewhere for undergrad. Then, perhaps, move on to Hofstra Law. I know plenty of successful Hofstra Law grads who did just that.

Stop typing while I type :)

I appreciate the advice

Agreed. The individuals I am acquainted with who are attending Hofstra for undergrad are not having the best experience. If you’d like to stay in the NY area, why don’t you look into some of CUNY’s honor programs? Your stats, while probably not good enough for programs like Macaulay, are competitive for the honor programs there. If you’re in New York, you ought to be able to find a better undergrad school.

The problem is that it’s largely a commuter school. The academics are ok, but if you’re looking for the typical college experience (campus life, etc), you would do better elsewhere.
