I just got accepted to RISD. The "Number 1" Art school in the country.
I feel like now its necessary to go there although I have no intentions of going at all.
It's like getting into accepted to Harvard but instead going to NYU. It's like the same case here but I want to go to SVA instead of RISD. I just have so much liking of SVA overall. Yet I don't want to take this chance of going to SVA than to RISD. Since RISD is like the "best" art school and take my opportunity there...

hey, i know how you feel! to be honest, i don’t really know that much about you (or what major you’re taking) so i can’t say if you’ll be making the right decisions or not, but here’s MY two cents on it… i don’t think the school rankings matter so much, if your gut feeling tells you that risd might not be the right fit for you, then maybe listen to it? what’s the point of going to a ‘top’ art school but not liking it; since you said you like SVA better overall. but i think it’d be better to talk to some students and stuff, it might help a lot. :)

RISD is a much more selective school than SVA, but you can get a fine education at both. You really need to focus on your department because that is what it will come down to-the curriculum, the faculty, the requirements, the studio space, etc. An undergrad degree will be stronger on your resume when applying for grad school although your portfolio and your faculty recommendation and artist statement will matter the most.

I feel like I’m kinda in the same position. I also got accepted to SVA and RISD and, overall, SVA does appeal to me more though RISD is n1. I did a pre-college program at SVA and since then have been pretty hooked on it. Its going to be impossible to decide, especially considering there are other school I’m waiting to hear from as well.

I think ryissi is totally right but I know it’s not as easy as it seems.

Good luck

I am not sure about SVA, they wanted my daughter to apply and she was not impressed as they don’t have much of a campus. But my daughter also feels the same way about RISD. One of her art teachers told her that RISD although a great school, is so rigid in its training, they don’t allow for much freedom of expression. She is also looking at SAIC and a few others. Go see the school and see if its a fit, that is the best way. She also went to Yale for a pre college program and they told her there that most artists got to RISD as a first choice but if your a great artist, does it really matter which school you pick? I would go with your gut and look at what each gives you. That what we will be doing. Many of the Ivy leauge also have great art programs, like Columbia, who knew, so don’t limit yourself to any just one. Good luck

NYC itself is a campus for me. I committed to SVA. RISD seems like MICA… (hate that place)

Why do you hate MICA? Just curious, since that’s one of the only art schools I applied to but don’t know as much as I want about it.

My 2nd cousin goes to MICA and some people I know from school currently who visited MICA say that it’s mainly and strictly a “art” environment. Meaning there’s nothing around besides the school itself. If you want to be where all you do is art all day every day and not going to places and socialize with other people. MICA is recommended. Not saying it’s a bad place since it’s like Top 10 art school. These are the things I’ve heard tho by there experience. Personally I can’t deal with confinement like that whether if art is my strong major or not.

ah I see - yes I do get that sense. I would rather be confined than be at risk of being slaughtered though as many people warn me… as long as there are clubs and maybe enough moral people (I’m really not for drugs or smoking…) I think I can survive.
but the possible lack of it is what’s worrying me at the moment.

Anyway back to topic so which are you veering for? Did SVA give you scholarship? One of my seniors had crap grades but was accepted to RISD because she painted so well, but for some reason she went to an art school in Manhattan and it’s most likely SVA. I doubt it was for scholarship, but maybe for the location itself. I’m assuming she’s going for Illustration.

*Edit I actually regret not having applied to SVA. The lack of selectivity just turned me off, but thinking back about it I’ve only heard good things about the school. (better than Pratt for example)
