I’ve always loved history and often research it on my own time. I also like language. I’ve taken 5 years of Latin in school and I’m thinking of doing a degree in Japanese.
I’m pretty sure I want to be a teacher. And I’d like to teach abroad if at all possible. Preferably Australia. So would these make me “marketable”?
Some history majors require at least a course or two that use primary sources in another language, so a lot of times you’ll need to be taking some language courses anyways. Understanding the language of the culture you’re studying is a necessity after college if you’re planning to do research. But it seems like you enjoy languages, and since history majors aren’t too demanding, you could easily fit in a second major.
If by teaching you mean high school teaching and lower, a language major isn’t really required, but would definitely help with job prospects. Having the double major gives you a lot more flexibility in case you decide you don’t want to go into teaching.
