Is it a good strategy to switch from Accounting to Logistics in a Company?

Thanks in advance for your help. Currently, I'm a sophomore majoring in Accounting and International Relations and plan on becoming a CPA (hopefully!).

I've recently grown interested in Supply Chain Management / Logistics, but my university does not offer it as a major, I do not wish to transfer seeing as I am almost beginning junior year, and I believe accounting still offers the best practical skills for a business major.

That said, is there potential to, say, after I become a CPA and IF I choose to work for a company, switch from the accounting department into logistics and supply chain management? I would imagine that accounting knowledge like cost accounting would be very applicable to that field, and would therefore give me an advantage.

Or is such a switch unrealistic, and would a SCM/Logistics degree be a requirement?

Thanks for your help,
James

I would say it depends on the company in question. Most individuals who are looking to go into the supply chain/manufacturing/operational management side of things pick up the CMA (Certified Management Accountant) license.

In terms of switching from an accounting position to a logistics/supply chain position within a company, I would think that it would take more than just whatever your degree major was to determine your viability for the position, which includes your level of experience, etc. within the new role you are seeking.

This is such a question that varies SO MUCH based on the company. Some companies don’t let you move at all, some companies will if you have the right stuff (like the CMA license that jotucker mentions or the good experience). it’s not a good strategy or a bad strategy – it depends on what YOU want and what the company NEEDs.
