I'm a bio major and need an Ethnic Studies class (just transferred) and practically all were filled except Ethnic Studies 156. It's an upper div class and based on what I've read about the professor (Navarro A?) it sounds like it's going to be a horrific class. I didn't have a choice at the time since I needed to just get classes but now I really want to get out of it and find a different class. Is it going to be bad?

Do you need to take an upper div ethnic studies class? If I were you, I would see if there’s other open classes available that would fit your need. Either that, or crash some classes on thursday and friday and see if you can get in. I know there’s some spots open still in Asian Studies… if that would count for you.

There’s no point in taking a harder upper div course when you can just take a lower division course to fulfill that requirement. In fact, it would have no bearing on your degree at all, except that getting a better grade in the class versus a lower div class would be harder.

Registration opens again tomorrow so yeah I’m gonna see if I can get out of it.

Well…now I’m not too sure what to do. All the ratemyprofessor ratings for the guy teaching the Intro Class (001) say he is extremely tough and assigns massive quantities of reading while the other guy doesn’t sound as bad even though it’s an upper div class (oh yeah and there is no discussion for the upper div one which I guess is nice)

It really depends on the class. I’ve had upper div classes that are easier than lower div.

What’s important are the pre-reqs. Sometimes you do need the pre-reqs to do well.
