Is it any wonder that some Chinese students try to get into US Colleges?

If the government can relocate you
HLBB: I am a chinese citizen, when would the dame government come and re-locate me, there is a saying at Shanghai, “Want to be rich, get relocated”, for the small 15 square meters apartment rented from the government, government would give me another 100 square meters new apartment (own) + half a million RMB to several million RMB. ****ing government, when the relocate will come!!!

tell you what job you can or can not have
HLBB: The ****ing Communist government, when could you give me a decent job, I don’t want to study, I live on social security for only 800 RmB a month (although the hosing is free); most non-tech job only pay 1000 to 1500 RMB a month, only countryman would do, why communist government do not give me some 10K a month job??

what school you can or can not attend

HLBB: ****ing Government, why I have to study hard to go to the good college, in America, you can go to good college if you have month or your parents has connection.
Why you want to give even chance to those countryman???

how many children you may have
HLBB: ****ing Communist government, why not learn from US, give a tax cut for the family with more children instead of asking for bigger tax from the family with more children??? So, all lazy social member would continue have kids to collect the tax dollars from the government and enjoy the sex all year long.

Quote:
whether you may or may not participate in government, then your life belongs to the State.
HLBB: ****ing Communist government, my life belongs to the state?? This I don’t know.

Sure. I understand. But when they arrive here, and they are REPEATEDLY told that the system here is not so top-college-or-bust, that many many people go to “average” / state flagship universities and do just fine in life, and they persist in being so obsessed with the top few colleges (Ivies and a handful of others) – it calls into question what being intelligent really is. Because part of intelligence is learning to listen to what other people are telling you and understanding that the culture that you’ve moved into is different from the one you left.

Look, if I moved to China, and thought that having cool extracurriculars and volunteer accomplishments really mattered for entering college there, that would be evidence that I wasn’t very intelligent – because I’m not picking up on the cultural signals / milieu of China. Yet these parents move here, get repeatedly told that it’s not just all about the scores and it’s not just all about the handful of top colleges, and they don’t listen. So … all the smarts in the world don’t really matter if you can’t even figure out what’s going on around you.

BTW, passing gao-kao is not the only way to go top college, I win the first price in high school math olympics, so I went to top college without passing the test. The test is really really tough and you have to be overall very good to go to my college, I will never make it, non American kids would have a chance at all.

For oversea Chinese, I would have to let your American know something.
They Generally Lie about CHINA.

Let me tell you why.
In the past, MOST Chinese college students are from countryside, they are from poor family and go to college, get payed by tax money to study, and graduate;
Chinese society does not have class, BUT, it is much more sophisticated compared with America, you would have to know how to behave, how to talk, how to make good joke, how to dress, how to flirt to be respected in the society (American has no social life at all, So I should not comment more). What does that related with oversea Chinese student?

When those countryman college student graduated from college, they feel as good as the result resident in the city and they want to find job in the city and settle down, then they find themselves in a very hard condition, they are treated as criminal (simply they mostly speak Mandarin and bad dresser), and because of the CHINESE residential system, they would almost NEVER be able to become a permanent resident in City like Shanghai and Beijing (for shanghai, marry a Shanghainess for 15 years).

As a result, lots of them seek oversea opportunity.
Now you know why they always cheat themselves that their kids get better education in US, and how their life is way better in US ( in someway, simply in US, there is no social life, they are no longer under social pressure as looked like a countryman in the city).

Most American comments are completely out of touch with the reality of china and different Chinese groups, the secret I put here is commen sense in Chinese group but no one will tell.

Listen, we have different cultures. I think the American culture is better. You know why? Because I live here, have spent most of my life here, and have benefited from the American way of life. If you have benefited from the Chinese way of life, then you may consider it superior. But I am American and will always consider our way of life superior in most (not all) respects. This is normal, expected, and rational.

For those of you who prefer the Chinese way, you are welcome to go and raise your kids there. Seriously, it’s a free country. (Well, at least here it is.)

I think the American culture is better. You know why? Because I live here,

Because I live here, have spent most of my life here, and have benefited from the American way of life.

That makes a lot difference; It is just so much fun to see those brainwashed America, better than those stand up comedian.

To hibb, I think your post is was very interesting and it explains why American people may not be willing to extend the same level of patience with your culture as they do others. You must realize that Americans are for the most part very patriotic and we honor our country and all that it represents. When you make derogatory remarks about our system of education, government and social values we do not understand why you would come to our great country. If you are here for 11 out of 12 months a year but you know you want to return to your homeland than by all means you should. You have acquired the ability to go back and change the problems that your countrymen are faced with. If America is a place for you to earn your quick money but you can not appreciate the culture or opportunities then you do not belong in this country.

There are so many talented and brilliant American students that must forego the opportunity to study at some of the finest institutions in the world that happen to be in their homeland, AMERICA. We as Americans accept this and for the most part we embrace it because it is the very thing that makes us America. We are a country filled with immigrants and as a result we keep the door open for all that want an opportunity. However, when you or any immigrant seems to just take, and not feel there is a need to assimalate you cause your own problems.

We are America, the greatest country in the world. We know this because everyday we see people trying to come here. They come for freedom,opportunity and safety from radical lunitic leaders. If our country is not your country than by all means leave. We don’t like your inability to appreciate what our country is giving you.

Quote;

HLBB: I actually want to help. Me, like most Chinese people, believed those propaganda that in America, everything is perfect, including, free mansion for everyone, free medicare for everyone, free education for everyone… my parents even believe those Chinese TV program that every American old man would have black servant with white shirt and black tie to serve them. That is the America Chinese propaganda gives to its people.

After I came, I found there is no free mansion, people live in those wood structure called “House”, which in china would be considered as temp structure for construction worker.
People do not have free medicare; Education, — sort of, very bad, Average US college junior only have the math capability of China’s 6 grade, not even mention the logic and the method to solve the issue independently, simply not well trained, hardly literate. Not even mention the terrible social structure, in Shanghai, a single girl walk outside 3:00AM is normal, in US, that is called suicidal.

Quote:

HLBB: That is true, I never want to belong to any group, why should I? Only brainwashed people want to join those group to get “protection”, including most American; I pay 50% tax, no benefit, why & what should I appreciate?

Quote:

HLBB: I agree, lots of American student was talented, but sorry, your education system sucks too much, with time going on, they miss the period to build up their capability to learn and to establish their basic world view, later they would find themselves can only work in administration or as bank teller.

Quote:

HLBB: Without people like me, those American high tech company has to go Asia, and I pay half of my income as income tax (state, fed, SS), so actually you should appreciate me to keep some job here.

Quote:
We are America, the greatest country in the world.
HLBB: I call this brainwash. America has its 5 minutes glory, but go back to your history book, china would come back again and run the world for another 2000 years; human history is also part of our universe, dramatic change does not always happens.

Quote:

HLBB: Sorry, I mainly come for money, also some isolation from the competition from CHINA, seriously, I cannot compete with those young guys.

^So you’re trying to claim that China gives it’s people a better standard of living than America?

To Queen’s mom - the second generation kids are being raised by their first generation parents and the culture remains strong. If you notice most Chinese kids will visit China nearly every summer and while they are there they are going to school. These visits back to the homeland keeps these kids well grounded in the culture and the work ethic remains to be steadfast.

~~~~~~~~~ I do not agree, 2rd generation is ok, but third generation mostly screw up, those Morons, should send their kids back to china to get educated or like what oversea Chinese did in Vietnam or Malaysia, establish Chinese school; How can Chinese student not affected by their American friend? Those American kids are mostly bad, just look at those robbery case at shanghai committed by those American kids from International school. Only thing they know is DRUG, SEX, ROBBERY, DRUG, SEX, ROBBERY,… NO MATH, NO ENGLISH,…
hibb— You are able to post on this site because THIS IS AMERICA. Try saying this in CHINA. You would be beaten then put in jail.
By the way I think you are a ■■■■■ just trying to infuriate.
^Some people are really that ignorant. But I’d guess he’s just a ■■■■■ also. It looks like he joined today just to post in this thread.
better standard of living than America?
HLBB: I would have to say I grew up at Shanghai, and you know, CHINA has 1.3 billion people and shanghai has only 18 million; So I can only say from my own observation, Shanghai’s living standard is WAY WAY better than California although the per-capital GDP is only 1/4;
Several way,
  1. Safety of the environment,
    I do not even know how to start, just like to compare a banana with a watermelon. Shanghai is by far the safest city I had ever been, except Tokyo, no matter big or small. I feel the same way as those foreigner feels.
as 1.
Infrastructure,
as 1.
If you have a chance to go, you would have to be impressed, of course some building does not mean a lot, I think the sophisticated people is more fun.
Homelessness issue,
not even heard of at Shanghai, most Chinese people do not even understand the word “homelessness”, so it would be easy for them to confuse between the professional begger with homeless. The leak of Home lessness is partically because chinese family normally has strong family tie, also because government’s zero tolerance; and also because privatization is still going on so if you rent from government, you never be homeless.
I do not have the CA’s number, but Shanghai’s infant fatality rate and life expantancy is all better than NYC.
Living condition
CA we have those slum, never saw those thing in Shanghai, Shanghai does have some people live in bad housing, but they are just like me, ordinary citizen with ordinary job and same opportunity, just pass the test, go to nice college, and change your life. IN US, for most Blacks and Latinos, that is only a “dream”.
Most CA home has a bigger living space than Shanghai’s home.
Most CA home’s quality is way inferior, made of wood.
Social life,
American do not have this thing. I saw mostly fat man and women at South Bay, terrible and terrible.
I lived at Shanghai for 27 years and lived at CA for 9 years so my observation should at least not that biased.
That’s one test in order to get into any college or university. Every American student has many options to get around taking the SAT and going to at least a community college.
in reality there are more than one test in china, you can go to top college because you win the olympics, or doing something extraordinary for the country, which I am not totally agree.
One test system prevents corruption, China's ex-prime minister Li Peng's daughter cannot pass the test, she can only go night school and get adult college certificate, that is most fair system for those countryman (although they do not appreciate, after enjoy free education, free food,... and the fair chance to get them out of their situation).
