Is it bad to take a few free periods my senior year?

I’m trying to find the best schedule for my senior year. I’m taking aice English, aice history, Spanish 2, anatomy, and pre cal so far. At my school we run on a 8 period schedule leaving me 3 periods short. I’m not to sure if I want to fill those up with all electives or have them free so I can get more hours at work. My top for schools are Fsu, Lsu, Howard, and my in state which is Wsu. So would it be so bad?

Three free periods is too many, IMO. Can you block them so that maybe you could take a course at a local CC? Or work? I just can’t see many colleges being happy with that much free time in the day. Take another academic course, and maybe a course you are interested in for fun. I really think you could do yourself a disservice by having too many free periods.

What about AP or IB classes? Not sure if AICE is considered more rigorous but if it isn’t and if you’re not taking any and haven’t taken any before, it’d be a good idea. You could also take electives in the area of interest for your degree (so a business class if you want to major in marketing). Having one free period is one thing but 3? My school doesn’t even allow that because it’s just a bad idea. If you school has a class called internship (what I will be taking next year. You get an internship per semester), work study (lets you go to work a period or two early), or dual enrollment (lets you take classes at a local college for college and high school credit) then take one of those instead. It’ll at least say something on your transcript. Good luck.

Can you take one elective, be a teacher or main office aide for one period and then take a study hall for the last free period? Having one study hall is not a bad idea. Three is a bit much. Being an aide is a nice compromise - you’re doing something, if not necessarily academic. As for the elective, take a chance on something you’ve never considered. Talk with your guidance counselor.

Speak with your guidance counselor about this. Some school districts would not allow you to leave school early for work, but others will. Especially if the work can be treated as a paid internship (your boss would need to give you a grade in addition to a paycheck).

You need one more academic class. For the last two free periods, see if you can leave school early to go to work (not to go home  ) or start one hour later and leave one hour earlier. You may also want to use one of the free periods to work on your applications.
