Is it easier, harder, or no different to reapply after a gap year?

I’m in a situation where I might have to do this for finaid considerations. At the elites, how would reapplying after a gap year affect your chances?

I would be doing productive things, like continuing with some of my ECs, taking enrichment classes (probably a language), and participating in an Olympiad.

I’ll probably apply to HYPMSC

Has anyone done this before?

Most at my school planning a gap year apply as usual and then defer. Did you apply this year? If the issue is getting into schools you didn't the first time, you need to have a phenomenal plan in terms of how you spend the year.

the issue is applying to schools i didn't even apply to this year, due to silly reasons.

i already got into a school.

also, anyone know if it's acceptable to defer matriculation at a school for a year, and reapply to different schools during your gap year?

Some selective schools will not accept another application so soon or ever! Are you trying for a better school? Who turned you down? Have you considered a PG year at a prep school? Many students find this a useful way to improve the CV.

i only applied to two schools, both very selective. i got into one, dinged at the other. i'll reapply to the one i got dinged at and apply to several others.

what do you mean "so soon or ever?"

Look up the poster "nopoisonivy". Her son did this and was quite successful, but he did work on his interests during that year.

Anyone know of any other places/people to look for?

i know the ivies are fine with deferring, as long as it's for a good reason and they are very interested to see what you do

i know of one guy who is deferring yale for one year to live in chile and help the community

i know they are fine with deferring, but are they okay with you applying to different schools while you're doing so?

best way is to call them directly and ask...i don't think you'll be receiving much help from us

One worked at a prison and an orphanage in Bolivia the other walked the Appalachian Trail and worked as a ski bum that winter. All was fine with deferring. One does not need to do research in artificial red blood cells to use the deferral year wisely.

thanks. i'm sure there are plenty of things i could do here as well.
