I am a sophomore and I want to join the mailing lists and I want to if it is good to.
Have any of you joined any mailing lists?
Does it have benefits?
Does it help you?
It is super easy to do and it’s it good way to learn about colleges. A lot of info you can find online but it doesn’t hurt to look through flashy marketing material that colleges want to send you. It is probably the best way to start showing interest at this early of a point. It’s a minor thing but anyway to show interest certainly helps.
Why not? No harm in getting some mail. If there are colleges you are interested in, write them and ask for information. You can start thinking about what you want. Benefits? Some schools track interest, so if you contact them asking for material, you get a head start on showing interest.
When you take the PSAT you can check the box that releases your name to colleges and you will get tons of mail. Just know that the mail you receive is marketing, not recruiting.
It doesn’t hurt as long as you don’t mind getting A LOT of mail from places. Receiving this mail is a great way to learn about schools you are interested in and learn about schools you have never heard of before. I was inundated with mail (you literally accumulate giant folders if you let it build up!) but I believe it helped me get a broader view of what was out there.
Look for college fairs in your area and try to attend if you can! Not only are they a great way to get information about a college, but you can get easily added to the mailing list and you’ll often get free stuff! I went to one today to go scouting for freebies and got 4 new pens and a drawstring bag. Score!
For those colleges you are interested in, it is a good way to get 1) Information and 2) show interest in a college. The colleges will tell you about upcoming information sessions or open houses.
I’d wait till your junior year to join the mailing lists. You can generally do it online for each school you are interested in.
JOining the mailing list will “count” as “interest”, so there’s no downside to doing it.
Distinguish between the brochures that are sent to you because of test scores and brochures sent to you because you requested them; only the latter “count”, since you made the move. In addition, those brochures sent after you take the SAT or ACT are NOT sent by the Admissions office at the universities - your score or geographical locations trigger an automatic send that a third party manages and the university itself has never heard of you at that point.
And some send literature once a week! So be ready for that. Get in the habit of opening every scrap. We got scholarship offers written only on one sheet of paper in an envelope.
Thanks I Joined a Few bopper and jmbakh

Get ready for a deluge! Also, be prepared for lots of mail from obscure schools you’ve never heard of too!
If you have a fireplace or a wood stove, it’s excellent!
