If so, what do I ask/say?
So, you think it would be a good idea to take up their time even if you have no idea what to say?
Not unless you have a legitimate question you can’t get answered on their website. Otherwise you are a nuisance. Focus on putting a great application together. Go on a campus tour, to any events in your area, and interview if they are available and you think you are a good interviewer (otherwise skip it).
I agree with the comments above; however, if a college you love visits your high school or your city, it is good to try and meet the regional admissions officer for your geographic area so they can hopefully remember you come application time. Again, however, try and come up with intelligent questions when you meet them.
If you are wanting to do it to show interest, make sure the school tracks interest or cares. Some don’t.
I am sorry but I disagree with intparent on one point. If you are offered an interview I would think it might be viewed as a negative if you refuse the interview. The school just might think that means you are not interested.
As for being bad at being interviewed. The kids I interview are not professionals, are not mature, are not poised. As an interviewer it is my job to make the applicant be relaxed and secure enough to have the best interview they are capable of… And, to give them every chance. As an interviewer I factor in that these kids are not adept at interviewing.
The one problem that I see is with the kids who have had mock interviews. Typically they try to address a perceived weakness (shy, introverted, quiet, not confident). To correct that the kid just does not come across as themselvesor authentic - and it can become a bad interview.
Kids be yourself. Be honest.
There is room for all kinds at all schools.
So you are not a leader, OK. So you are shy, OK. You will excel at something else! Just be who you are. And, good luck!!!
