I am a guy attending Kirkwood CC (Freshman) and will be transferring to the UofI for Sophomore year, and I am just wondering how hard it is to make friends as a transfer. I am pretty social, but considering I will be new to the U, it would seem that most people would have their social niches/circles already and possibly not open to meeting new people. Is this the case? Thanks in advance.
@sdggkk, congratulations on your move to the University! I hope you have a great year.
I am a father of a recent grad and can’t speak from experience at Iowa specifically, but thousands of years ago I transferred from one school to another as a sophomore and made the fatal mistake of moving into a studio apartment by myself. I would advise you adamantly - live in a dorm with a roommate! While many friendships are made on the floor in one’s freshman year that process starts all over again the next year as the whole mix of bodies is jumbled up in new buildings. Old friendships are maintained (sometimes) and new ones are formed. You’ll be fine.
If you live off-campus (like I did) it will cut you off completely. Avoid that and avoid a single room in a dorm.
I would actually suggest a single room in a dorm. Mainly because you can avoid roommate conflicts and also have people over whenever you want
