Is it harder to fit in initially if you are not on a sport team, and do you know if ...

getting into a sorority is highly competitive and difficult, especially if you come from the northeast and don’t know anyone? Also, how well do grads do in finding employment? Thanks!

@citymama9 - As a parent of a non-athlete and member of a sorority: It is not difficult at all to fit in if you’re not an athlete. Sorority recruitment is nothing like it is at big state schools. Most of the sororities are local and rush is exceptionally low key and non-competitive.

A lot of grads go on to professional schools. Many take a gap year after college and before grad school - often traveling, volunteering, working in a non-traditional job, etc. The career center is good and those seeking full-time, career employment after graduation seem to do well. My D’s roommate (a junior) is in the Carey Fellows program and after doing an internship this semester in Chicago (arranged by the school), she has a great job offer awaiting her after graduation.

@Overtheedge I’m so glad someone responded. Thank you! I’ve been reading about Sewanee and I think it’s a school worth visiting. I’m kind of intrigued, and I think my D might like it. Do you know how easy it is to double major? Thanks again.

@citymama9 - There are plenty of students who double major so it must be do able. The difficulty may depend on the particular majors chosen. I recently watched a video of a “My Sewanee Story” audition on Sewanee’s Facebook page and the presenter doubled majored in Computer Science and Spanish. I would think that would be tough, especially because languages are very intensive, but he seemed thrilled with his choice. Feel free to pm me if you have more questions or want additional info on Sewanee. It’s a wonderful school and a really special place with a tight knit community. The campus is gorgeous too.

@citymama9. Being from the Northeast/North is not an issue. There are 48 states represented and plenty of kids from outside the South. My D’s big sister in her sorority is from Massachusetts and her little sister is from Ohio.

@Overtheedge Thanks again! Very helpful. I may pm you if I have anymore questions. Now we just need to plan a trip to TN.
