Is it impossible to get into college?

I've been lurking on these threads for a long time. Everyone seems to have 3.8 to 4.0 GPAs and a whole long list of ECs. The highest my GPA is gotten this year is a 3.2, and I don't have the oppurtunities to be in school involved ECs. It seems as though with those statistics (from reading what I have on here) that it's completely impossible for an average or so student (mostly bs an as with a c in one subject plus a few honors classes and little ECs school related) that will need a lot of FA to be accepted into a college with all the competition. And no, I'm not talking about Ivy League or MIT or Stanford. I'm talking about Boston University or Florida State or Boston College.

I feel like I won't ever be accepted into any college that isn't a community one. Nothing bad is meant towards community college by that.

Of course you’ll get accepted into other colleges besides CC ones!
There’s a close friend of mine who has I think about a 3.0 GPA and she got accepted to plenty of colleges! She felt as if she wouldn’t get accepted anywhere and felt hopeless. She took mostly honors courses and did 2 APs (She dropped out of one this year since she wasn’t able to handle the workload and tests), but she managed. She didn’t get into the state school unfortunately, but there were others willing to accept her. She has a lower GPA than you and she still got a good amount of scholarship money. Chin up, there are other schools out there. You just have to research more and find ones that can fit your criteria and your academic/financial position.

Boston University and Boston College are huge stretches though :expressionless:

GPA and ECs aren’t everything, but it sure does help. There’s more to the package such as SAT/ACT scores, essays, teacher recommendations, etc. You may be lacking a bit in 2 areas, but you could exceed at the others.

To be honest, it’s getting very competitive at schools that weren’t traditional considered so difficult to get into. I’m a high school senior this year and the sheer amount of rejections that basically everyone got was shocking. A school like BU is becoming a high reach for the ‘average’ student; my friend was rejected with a 96 GPA and like, a 2050 on her SAT.

Ninja-edit: That said, there are still tons of colleges and you’ll definitely get in places. It’s just becoming less feasible for people to consider BU and schools of the same caliber a match or even a safety in some cases. Just be the best applicant you can.

check out some of the “3.0 to 3.3” threads here. Lots of encouraging stories there. If you have circumstances that prevent a lot of EC involvement, there is usually a place on the apps to describe that. I think you will find lots of great options.

@violistchan: That first article makes an excellent point. Kids obsess over the top schools and (especially) the Ivies for no reason other than the fact that they’re exclusive, which only makes them more exclusive. There’s plenty of amazing schools out there.
