Is it just me or is syracuse EXTREMELY underrated?

Is it just me or is syracuse EXTREMELY underrated?

…the students at syracuse were just as good as cmu and nyu…so what’s the deal?

shouldn’t syrcause be up there with the top 5 programs in the nation?

who knows…post your opinions!!

I agree. My son auditioned for drama at CCM, UMIch and Syracuse and felt Syracuse had a great program. Hr thought it was certainly in his top 5 and frankly that's all that matters. It's where you rank them! He found out today that he didn't get in Syracuse but was admitted to CCM.

Well I do agree they're a touch underrated, (case in point- I totally underestimated the school and the level of competition until I got there to audition!) but the students there will tell you that they're tied for #3 with UMich for MT.

Disclaimer- This was what a current student told me at my audition and I don't think there is actually a formal list, so take that with a grain of salt, I suppose

Maybe it's because Syracuse is in Syracuse? not to mention the drama dept being so far from the main campus.

I agree that being in Syracuse and being "down the hill" from campus is a negative, but it is a great program.

yea definitely....also i think if it didnt snow 1000 feet there 90% of teh time more people would wnat to go there...but really they are very good...better than nyu and up there with cmu

My opinion....there IS no ranking of MT programs. If a current student told you it was ranked #3, I'd love to see the list. I don't know of such list. I'd rather hear a student state why he/she likes their program and picked it. As far as the kids being as good as the ones at CCM and CMU....my feeling is that is very true of many of these well regarded programs. There are a lot of very very talented kids out there! There are talented kids at many different BFA programs (and beyond for that matter).

My feeling is that there is no ranking. There are programs that are well regarded with very good reputations. Some are considered "top programs" in this field. I think of it more in terms of "bunches". Syracuse certainly is a known program and well thought of. It is often thought of as one of the very good ones, though I haven't heard it mentioned as a "top" program per se. What matters MOST of all is to pick the program that is best for YOU. Reputation is a factor for many and in that regard, Syracuse has a good reputation.

My own kid liked Syracuse more after she auditioned/visited. It has many plusses and she'd have been happy to have attended. It wasn't her most favorite but surely was one she liked a lot and fit her well. She got in but did not end up attending. I liked what I saw and can think of several things about the program that were appealing to my child. As with anything, there are plusses and minusses and that is part of picking out the right college for you.

As far as talent, it is everywhere. Sometimes people land at one school instead of another by some luck of the draw as to which school wanted that student in a slot in the make up of their class. Afterall, I know someone at UMich and someone at CCM and someone at BOCO who did not get into Syracuse. They obviously are talented. Then I know people at Syracuse who did not get into those very same programs. My own chlid got into Syracuse but not the BFA at Emerson. You have to realize that these results are typical. Not every person is going to get into every program. The talent ends up at many programs. Syracuse has talented students. What is more important is to look into the details of the program and see if it fits what you want in a program. By the same token, you can be assured that this program is well known and has a good reputation overall. Does it really matter if it is not ranked number one? It is still a very good program. Go to the program that best fits you and also weigh into the decision the reputation. Many choose the best program they got into....both best in terms of fit and also in terms of reputation. Both matter.

Susan

PS...I will add a few things that were on the appealing side for my daughter with Syracuse....

well balanced program....singing, acting, dance.....she is into all three and the triple threat aspect of the field

current students seemed very happy

the director was great in terms of what he said the day of the audition

dance had some challenge

various performance opportunities, plus Equity theater on premises

semester in London

fall semester of senior year in NYC....new grant/program

opportunities to take liberal arts classes

nice size....20 students in the MT program per year

(location was less appealing....though there is a city)

Oh yeah I know there's no list and I don't put a ton of stock in what people say about numbers... the way you put it about bunches is kind of how I've been thinking about it myself. I was just passing on the example because it shows people do regard them as "up there"

Isn't it McNamara who is underrated? LOL After today's rejection I say ...."GO PITT!!!" :) Seriously though, we are totally having fun at this point, no sour grapes here. My d is excited about all of her acceptances so far, even though none with MT major...

OK, I play dumb.....who is McNamara? Is this a basketball player maybe? Just guessing cause basketball is big at Syracuse and I imagine it is that time of year but what do I know :D.

Totally huge right now with March Madness gearing up...Open today's sports page and you'll see his name. Tonight they play Pitt at 8PM for the Big East Conference. Is Vermont in this year? I'll have to check for you!

The joke was that McNamara was "overrated,", but when he crushed UCONN recently in overtime with a 3 pointer, his coach corrected everyone and said he's "underrated."

Melsmom....I don't follow basketball! I just checked the paper and UVM is in the championship game right now against Albany for the American East Championship.

You see, I follow skiing and just returned from my daughter's race in the National Collegiate Ski Championships (which I doubt too many of you follow!)

By the way, Syracuse was there....as this is a Syracuse thread afterall :D

But in keeping to your mood, Melsmom, my D's school came in third and was the only eastern team to make the podium. Syracuse is not in their "league" figuratively.

YESSS! Congrats to Brown. Gotta love those DIV l Sports...and McNamara is pretty spectacular BUT can he keep it up? It's anybody's ballgame with these college kids, that's why I love it.

Haha, I know all about the whole Gmac thing. At my school on Thursday and Friday all the teachers actually let us watch the game the last 2 periods of the day, and they were all talking about how overrated he was until he nailed those extra points at the very end to win those games.:)

I have to comment on behalf of Gmac and SU or my 13 yo son would disown me! Go Orange!
Evasmom (Harriet - SU alum)

Another SU alum (MSMDAD) says GO ORANGE! And I would agree that SU is underrated, especially given the two top-ranked colleges within SU - Newhouse and Maxwell.

I saw both times uconn beat syracuse (one time in person), and I must say that this is a fluke.....syracuse really isnt that good....in fact when I saw them play uconn during the season they stunk. UConn like usual does not come to play. They should have realized before the game that syracuse was going to do everything they could to win, because if they didnt they were out of the ncaa tournament. If UConn was playin their A-game like when they played villanova for the second time, they would have crushed syracuse by 20 to 25 points.

Perhaps, but like I said these kids are capable of anything...Did you see DUKE get spanked by UNC? That was great, a 15 seed kicking a 1 seed's A**! UCONN does need to step it up, a few notches for the big dance....

I love it....basketball....nothing like taking one's mind off of the college admissions process! YAY! :p
