Is it necessary for SAT Subject Tests to correspond to intended major?

If on my college app I state that I am interested in pre-med and biology, etc., is it necessary to take a science SAT Subject? I've seen students who go on to be pre-med at colleges without having taken a science SAT Subject Test but I'm not sure what they put down on their app as their intended major.

Its not necessary in the sense that its required, no. But colleges do want you to show interest and proficiency in your intended major, so in that sense it can only help you (assuming you do well). On the other hand, if you think you’re going to do poorly on the test, then its not worth it.

Most colleges say they don’t care which Subject Tests you take – just take the ones you feel most comfortable with. They probably realize that your declared major will change anyway. Only certain specialized schools such as MIT will want specific Subject Tests (math or science, excluding Bio). You’ll probably have to look into that for the schools you’re applying to.

For pre-med, you can go ahead and take Bio (I imagine you’re proficient in it if you want to go into pre-med anyway). I think many declared pre-meds do, but it’s by no means a requirement. I’m also a declared pre-med and took Bio, but ironically it’s my lowest score of all my Subject Tests. I may not even send it.

It varies school to school.

For example, Columbia’s School of Engineering is very specific in that it requires chemistry or physics (no biology).

I doubt they have the resources, commitment, or energy to check up on little things like if your intended major matches with subject tests.
