Is it necessary to cancel SAT scores

So I took the SAT subject test on 5 Dec (French and WH). I did ok for French but my WH was crap. I’m wondering what’s the difference between cancelling score and choosing not to submit it? If I don’t cancel but don’t submit will the schools know about that score? Also can I cancel one subject only or do I have to cancel all the tests I took on that date?

If you cancel your score, it will cancel all of the tests you took that day - so in your case, including French. If you cancel it just means that they won’t score the test and it will not show up as a test you took. Some schools ask to see your full testing history, so if you do not cancel but get a score you may not be particularly proud of, some schools may see that score. If they allow score choice for Subject Tests, then they won’t see what you don’t submit. It depends entirely on your choice of universities, however, so check their websites to see what their policy is.

Cancellation (must be done by Wednesday after the test date): Cancels entire day of tests and thus if you took two subject tests both will be canceled. Effect: erases the existence of the tests from any of your records. No one will know you even took the tests unless you tell them.

Waiting for scores and then not sending them: Some colleges require that you provide all test scores including subject test scores and thus you cannot withhold them from those. Also, many high schools put all your scores on your transcript sent to colleges with the result that having College Board withhold them when you send official scores will accomplish nothing except to prove you tried to withhold scores when the college gets your transcript.
