For my common app essay I chose the fourth prompt, concerning a creative work. In my case, it was a Van Gogh painting. My tutor and counselor liked it but added that I should put the painting in the background of the essay because it would have a great visual impact and enhance the essay. I wouldn't put the picture in the background since it has quite a lot of black and the words wouldn't be readable (I'm applying on paper), but rather at the end.

However, I began having doubts about this whole thing since supposedly everything in my application is my work. Of course I'd mention the artist and the museum that houses the painting but still.... I don't want to give a wrong impression or get into trouble.

I don’t think you should add the picture, but definitely should not put it as a background. Adding the picture might give “some” impact, but if it is not allow then the admission might have something negative against you. i would not risk it, but then again, that just me. Good luck :)

The thing is I’m an international so I don’t really know how to go through this whole application process. I went to this tutor because I’ve heard she has helped students apply before but I’ve realized she isn’t actually that much help and most of the things I had to look up on the websites or email colleges or just guess what is right or wrong. I never thought though she’d give me advice that could actually work against me.

I’m still not sure what to do. Any other opinions?
