I'm starting to write my common app essay and i was just wondering if the tactic of adressing the reader like that is acceptable. If you didn't get the example from the title here;s another one:
Lucky for you, i'm not going to ramble on about my uber boring life." [no, that is not a sentence of my actual essay]

any thoughts?

thanks.

well it's a bit presumptuous to think you can read the reader's mind, and considering this audience, it's probably not good to insult. now if you all of a sudden had like heavy metal music emitting from the page or something, that would warrant a warning!
When I'm writing and I feel tempted to address the reader, I try to turn it into a statement related to the topic of the essay. you might just completely omit the portion directly addressing the reader. the implied message would probably come through anyway.

you probably wouldn't get rejected on those grounds, but I like to talk about the nitty-gritty of English.

no, it sounds ridiculous. show don't tell.

now i can go and change half of my essay. lol.
thank you though for saving me from writing a horrible essay.

typically, you should never use the second person in these kind of essays.

try to state your thoughts in anecdotal format. tell a story. be creative. :)

never.
thats a big no-no.
