is it okay to talk about gun violence/gun reform in my essay?

so im most likely going to choose the “problem you have solved/would like to solve” topic on common app and talk about gun violence (which im sure is gonna be a popular topic this year). ive done a lot of gun violence prevention advocacy including working with nonpartisan organizations and lobbying and a bunch of other stuff but u get the point. would this be considered “too political” for a common app essay? i dont really think its really political tho bc im going to write the essay as nonpartisan as possible and 95% of my work has been nonpartisan and most colleges are hella liberal so… yeah whats ur opinions

I think that is a good idea, especially if you applying to liberal colleges. Plus, a lot of applicants will not be writing “edgy” papers like that when applying which may make you more appealing to admissions officers.

Even liberal colleges won’t want a very liberal stance on any topic, so yes, aim for nonpolitical.

My concern is how will this essay reveal your personality? You have to bear in mind that the main goal is to help admissions officers get to know the person behind the application. Will they be able to get to know you, or will they just know that you advocate for stronger gun laws? Your essay needs to convey a sense of your personality.
